Italian Headquarters in Northern
Italy.?Going to points along the
Viave river where th? heaviest fight
inu has oeeurred the Associated
Press correspondent was told by officers
of unusual circumstances connected
with the engagements. The
colonel commanding" Hie ifeisaguer
who carried tiio day, said t!io strategy
which the AusTriuns attempted
turned the tide against them.
In ilie fight on. the cemetery roa 1.
it was suddenly observed early Satin
day morning that a number of
Austiinns were coming toward the
Italian lines with both hands help up,
as though ready to surrender. For a
moment it was believed the fight was
over and that the enemy had capitulated.
But i* was then noticed that
all the Austrian machine guns had,
been removed and closer observation
showed that behind this front
line of men with their hands up followed
lines with bayonets and machine
guns.
The Italians let them come until
the range was short and they were
between t wo en fining fires. Then a
deadly fire was opened on both sides

in heaps. It was then that the rout
beg-an. The Austrian resistance was
broken. At Sega Mill where the enemy
had a brief lodgment, lie was
forced back until he was driven to
the brink of the river and then into
the water. The Austrians were buyonetted
and killed or captured.
Italians Stand Firm.
Violent Austro-Gennan attacks are
being thrown against Monte Totnba,
but the Italians have repulsed all effort;'':
successfully. The position is
one of the hist natural strongholds
protecting the plains of western Venetia
behind the l'iave river and th.e
invaders arc making strenuous efforts
to gain it.
Italian offensive operations east of
Asiago continue and the invaders,
have been driven from several positions
with the loss of more than MOO
prisoners. No furthef attempts have
been made by the Austro-Germans
to cross the Piuve, after the destructive
results attending the efforts of
last week.

The great battlefield has taken on
the aspect of scenes in wars gone by.
It is no longer a conflict of trenches
and shell holes, but of men struggling
bitterly with rifles and bayonets
over a virgin battleground,
while the long neglected cavalry
sweeps against the enemy positions
over the wide territory involved.

Many rejoicing noncombatants, men,

This has been a battle of strange

has been witnessed than that a'
