The publication, ! Farmers' Bulletin 872, "The Boilworm or Corn Earworm," by V. C. Ilishopp, describes the insect, its habits, and control methods, of which fall plowing is tlie most important. Names of the \Yk|i in. The worm has several names?cotton bollwo'rm, corn earworm, tomato I I'ruitworm, and false bud worm of tobacco. Under these names it is wide ly known in nearly all parts of the United States, and the damage it doer, is increasing from year to year. Tin character of its attack on all the crops affected is simliar. The cater pillars usually bore into and i'oel with in the plant tissues. When mature the insect is a moth or miller about 1 l-.4' inches across the wings when spread. It varies in color from a light* brown or olive green to pale yellow and it is commonly seen flying about in the evening. The larvae or eatrepillars are very small when first hatched. When full grown they are about 1 1-2 inches in length, and their color varies from pale green to almost black. They leave the plant when fully fed and burrow into the ground, where they form a kind of cell In which they transform to the resting stage. The last brood in the fall stays in the ground at a depth of 4 to 6 inches until warm weather the following spring. Important Step in Controlling Pest. Thorough breaking of the land in which thc worms have buried themselves for the winter at some lime m late fall or winter, is thc most important single step in controlling this pest. The practice of fall and winter plowing, aside from bollworm control, is desirable because it conserves the moisture, puts the ground in belter condition for planting and enables the farmer to plant at the propel time the following spring. Furthermore, fall plowing destroys eggs of grasshoppers, hibernating places oi chinch bugs and other destructive ;n sects. The bulletin mentioned also discusses other means of combating the worms as they appear on crops in the spring. o How many farmers are there .0. this county who fully realize the importance of economy and caiefu! spending during this time of inflated values? A Poll tax of One Dollar, for School purposes, is levied upon every male citizen between the ages of 21 and 60 years, able to earn a living, except confederate veterans over 50 years old. CAPITATION DOG TAX ^ A Capitotion tax of One Dollar is levied upon each dog in the County. COMMUTATION ROAD TAX Road Tax for ID IS is payable from January 1st. to March loth, 1018. FISHERY STAMPS Fishery Stamps can be obtained at the County Treasurer's Office at any time. Those who write for statement of taxes will please state whether or not their property is all in one School District, and give the name and number of the School District.
