I GERMANS LEAVE WEfSEH FEiNSULA Operations Around Riga Un!iko!y to Bo Developed Further M1TJLI.ERY FIOiiTlflO ON WE STERN FRONT 3crmans Wrest Advancer Trenches From French. Hold Only Portion. On the northern Russian front th? Germans have extended their withdrawal movement to include the force that recently was landed on the Werdor peninsula, after the capture of Oesel Island and Moon island at the entrance to the Gulf of Riga. Thi. landing was viewed at the time as a threat against Reval, the Russian nival base on the Gulf of Finland and as a possible prelude of more ex ten sive land operations by the German; in the direction of Potrograd. The withdrawal leaves the Ger. mans without a foothold on the Esthonian coasts, attempts by them to ] follow up he original landing by putting troops ashore at points both north and south of the peninsula having failed, according to the Russian reports. There has been prevalent the assumption that there never v. as any intention by the Germans to push their Riga operation much beyond the naval stage this fall, the i threat against the Gulf of Finland may well have been a diversion for political effect in Russia or t0 distract attention from operations ;i preparation elsewhere. Operations carried out by the Belgians and French looking toward the elimination of Houtholst forest nort' of Ypres, are progressing favorably The entire Merckem pennisula, south of Dixmude, has been captured by A1 lied troops, who have also taken Merckem and several other village west of the forest. The British hoi . the southern side of the forest and ? continuation of the Bel go-French would make the German position un tenable. Germans May Withdraw. A ( 1ao J 4 * v vjbtm.an i urn i 111? 111 Warneton and Dixmude to straight^' out the line and eliminate the Yprc salient is not unlooked for in C.e> ma: ' military circles. One loading Gc man critic, Major Moraht, says th* front is untenable, and that the Gc r nians will have to retire to a ne* line. Such a line probably would rn through Menin to Itoulers to Thou out and thence to the sea. The artillery battle is being co' tinned in Flanders and in sectu ns v the Aisne front, and the Verdun i i gion. In the last named, the G i n ans attacked .spiritedly last night : the Chaume wood and Ilcvxnvaux ca o1' th.e Mouse , and won s me'hit n\ore than 500 yards of advance trenches.
