Their industry will make of this section, the garden spot of South Carolina. f" ' ^ Q Use the money you get from the cotton this year in widening the fields to plant and raise grain next year for the allies. They will need it and the price will be high. P The farmer who will save from his income this year to invest in more lands cleared next vear, in drainage and other farm improvements, shows the foresight which will make him the equal of the business men of any community, and the beauty of it is that he will be independent. o There is no better investment in the country than a liberty bond. Nearly all the travelling salesmen of the country are buying liberty bonds because they know they are good investments to leave the wives and children. o A liberty bond ' $50.00 is just as safe as a lot of land of the same value. If it be unimproved land, the bond is better for from it you will receive an income of \ per cent, while the land being unimproved will bring you in nothing unless it be from increased value. o Getting a high price for tobacco and cotton this year means nothing to the farmer unless he spends this money wisely. Money is one of the easiest things in this world to throw away; and when we say easy to throw away we mean easy to go by means of extravagant habits and the purchase of things that the farmer does not need. Lack of business coordination i ahown at this period of the war in the matter of the free space that country newspapers are perfectly willing to donate to the cause. In making food the time is here | when we need all the food and more ! than is made. We ought to be more i saving than we are in time of pea'-e and in time of war and 1 believe all i the farmers save all they can. Judg1 ing by myself 1 plant all I can work, ! all I can make, all I can eat, all 1 can J and sell all 1 can. Now we all know that the ma 1 or woman that tills the ground is all the one that makes food. The Holy Bible says man must earn his living by the sweat of his face, all the days of his life, and there are bnt few farmers compared to the pop! illation of the United States. There art hundreds of people around the J towns and cities not making an\ j f< od to save. There are scores of men and women seeking jobs to k p the n off the farm. There are scores of men ami women at pleasure resorts dleing away t! ir time, wasti ig food, and not n king any food to use or s. vo. There are seoies of lion *.s where negro cooks are < mi loyed 11i: j tin wife and mother id'es away theii lime not making an;, food. T! ere aie 1 se res of able hoiked men idleing i.way tlrnr time at baseball. There are scores of boys and girls idlcuig j away their time at daneo.-, paitn. : and other amusements. All must t)< ' fed by the farmer. The time ha come when our best help of the farm s taken away from us and put on the battle field with their lives at stake. Now we need food to keep them the e or we nuist be a ruined nation. We must have labor to replace the boys help that are gone to war. We must have the food supply doubled or we must lose. There are hundreds of /?f fln? ni/>U lmwl I CAIinl l'\' litI to KJl IllltJ 11*. II IclllVI ill vv?i VWVIM^I j . that have never been in cultivation just because so many people want to i live in town and will not stay in the ; country and clear it up to make food I on and if the government would make arrangements with the land owners for the use of all the land that the government could clear up and use, say two or three years and then put all those people that are idleing away their time to clearing up the land and making food on it we could soon have rough food to feed the world and hen when the government got hrough with the land and give it up o the owner he would have some fine irms to let out and our country .ouhl have more and betters farmers THE HOBBY HgEJ EE! We would be better able to feed the world, have more food and a better chance to make j more food, and would have plenty of food for our nation and some to sell, Tood is mighty scarce, so lets save all we can of it and do more. Lets try t\> get more people on farms and out in the country to making food and helping those already engaged in farming. Let everyone save all the food they can. Let everyone make all the food they can. Let everyone put ali of their idle time of 1918 in making food and see how much food wo will have to save in the fall of 1918. Yours truly, O. E.
