The burden on the country press
just at this time exceeds anything j
that ever happened in the history f
the publication of country shoe':..
Each and every department of the
government evidently realize- that
this is a time in the history of America
when the value of the country
papers will shew itself. Not only the
government itself, but each and eve y
voluntary private association in th'land
is evidently convinced that mu.-ii I
of the success of this country in the
groat conflict of swords depends upon
the information sent broaden-1 by tin
little country weeklies. A visit to any
editorial desk of any country paper
just now will show what we are inferring
to. You will find articles from '
dozens of government departments.

bundles of copy in behalf of the Red,

the council of defense, both national

who expect to get a fair

given out. And the little country
papers, though their burdens are
enough to make them grown, are coming
to the scratch the best they can.
and doing all that they can to satisfy
the faith that at last is being placed in
them. And one might wonder, as to
where any material profit could ever
come to them, by even the added sunport
of business men and concerns in
the way of business advertising that
is taken and paid for. Indeed many
of them are fully expecting to run at
a dead loss in view* of the high cost of

THE HORRY HEEi
HEARING IN CASE I
BY SPECIAL REFEREE
I
There was a hearing at the court
house last week before Mr. W. L.
Bryan, Cleik of the Court, as Special
Referee, in the case of G. J. Hoi lid ?y
vs. S. 1*. Calder, and Solon Colder,
concerning the distribution of the proceeds
of the sale of the Colder estate!
land in Galivants Frry township now
in the sheriff's hands.
The land in question is the estate of
the late Peter Calder, Sr., and the
land was sold about a year ago. Peter
Calder had made a mortgage in his
life time to Burroughs & Collins Company,
and this was unpaid at the time
of his death. This mortgage now appears
transferred t,o S. and S. L. Calder,
and these claim that they used
their own funds in taking it up; while
tne.plaintiff contends that it was paid
off with money put up by the widow.
Drusilla Calder, and that it is not a
valid charge if not in whole then ;n
part, against the estate land.
Several witnesses were examined
and the hearing was continued, ir.
order to take the tesitmony of several
witnesses who did not appear last
week.

EXCHANGING SCHOOL BOOKS
There has been some misunderstand
ing about the conditions of discarded
school books which are acceptable^
exchange for books that replaced
them.
The R. L. Bryan Co., has written
me "That the condition of the old
books makes no difference whatever
just so that they are being replaced by
new books, even if the pages are
torn it don't matter* or if the back
gone/'
