Monday night. A delighftul Fish Fry
was served on the hanks of the River
after which the people assembled in
the church to listen to the addresses.
The meeting was opened by singing
America following which Scoreta
1,. 1). Magrath outlined the purpos
and work of the council and then introduced
the first speaker, Mr. H
Kemper Cook, who made a strong appeal
to the patriotism of those present
to uphold the flag and make the
world safe for democracy. Ho wa?
followed by Hon. Jeremiah Smith who
plained the difference between au
tocracy and democracy and the world
effect of our democratic form of govemment
and ended in a strong appeal
to the women to do their part in their
sphere for the successful ending of
the war.
The meetings have been very instructive
and the public is urged to
attend them.

But they were greatly outnumbered
and gradually they were forced to
fall back until the Germans had regained
their hold on the hill. The
Bavarians then began a series of
heavy counter attacks and the Irish,
many of them wounded, and all exhausted,

every inch of the way, until they
reached the trenches which they left
at dawn and which they held. No
mere heroic effort has been made1
since the war began than this.
Beloved Chaplain Killed.,
Three had been many instances of 1
individual heroism, a striking case being
that of the chaplain who gave his
