W. C. Martin who raised a crop of
wheat harvested last May has decided
to sell what he has on hand to
those who want it for seed. This is
v.* hi at he said recently while in Conway.
Farmers who want to plant
wheat must get their seed in time.
It should he planted in October.
In the beginning the plan of placing
your farm on a business basis, get
rid of all forms of waste. See that
the plows, the harrows, the veh cles
and farming machinery are all housed
to protect them against the weather
when not in use. Many a dollar has
been allowed to rust away by carelessness
in this way.

It is a mistake, and a serious one,
for it to be published that marriage
since the registration on June 5th
would entitle the men to exemption;
for this country already had enough
hasty marriages to deal with, and it
did not need any more of such trouble.
News published in the papers of the
former ruling, or supposed ruling,
caused a rush to the marriage bureaus
of couples who went entirely
m isolated, and men evidently took
v/ivctf in a hurry such as they had
never intended to take but for this.
Now since it appears th^t the whole
draft will be embarrassed bly exemptions
claims exceeding all proportions
reasonably expected, it is seen that a
more careftil fifst statement of the
matter would have been much better
for the country. The ruling is now
extremely modified so tfcat the men
married since the draft went into effect
will not be excused if the father
or brother offers to siippoft tfie wife,
or if the wife has independent mean's
of living. ' . '

Here follows another instalment of the registered men
in Horry County beginning in this issue with order number
s:>4, the last name appearing in the instalmnet of Aug. 10th,
being order number 830. Understand there are 2384 registered
in the county as shown by the official list now posted
on the bulletin board at the county court house (at first the
total number of registered names in Hoiry county was given
as 2019; but some who did not register on the day appointee!,
June 5th 1917, came in and registered with the board afteri

by means of instalments until the whole 2387 names
have appeared in the paper giving- the order in which they
were drawn and are liable to military duty.
To keep, the whole list of the entire number of 2387
registered men in the county complete in your home, you
only have to get our issue of August 2nd in which the first
466 of the list appears, our issue of Aug. 16th, last week,
carrying the names up to 833, this issue with this next in
stalment, and the following issues of the paper until the
whole list is complete.

the local board on August 13th, 14th and 15th for physical
examination in order to try to get for the national arm\.
from that number, the quota of 233 men required from llos
ry county for the first increment of the new United States
army consisting of 687,000 soldiers. If the board gets the
233 out of the first 460 and some of the 466 are still left,
they will be sent on later; and should so many be exempted
out of th< first 466 that the 233 men cannot be had from
them, then the board will very soon call a number iflf men
for examination from the first of the instalment published
in oui- issue of last week, August 16th.
Understand of course that the whole of the 2387 men
registered in Horry County will be called sooner or later,
probably a new lot by November 1st or earlier as the war
department may decide. Unless the war should end sooner
than expected, every single man registered in Horry Countv
will be called for examination by some time in 1918, it is almost
sure. Be ready for your notice when it comes to you is
all we can say.
The first 2MM men who will go from Horry County, picked
from the first 4(>G names published August 2nd, will oe
required to report here for duty according to advices published
last week:
MO per cent to move Sept. 5th.
20 per cent to move Sept. 15th.
'10 per cent to move Sept. MOth.
10 per cent as soon as possible after Sept. MOth.
If this plan should be changed we will endeavor to get
it in the paper as soon as possible for the benefit of our
readers.
In order to move from here on the dates above men1
tinned, the men will of couise be summoned to appear here
before the local board on two or three days ahead of the
days they are to move from Conway.
