differences will be threshed out while
the two houses a;e considering- the
second measure, providing* for food
control and piico fixing.
The hid restricts drastically the
storing of foodstuffs, fuel and other
neccsMlies and speculation in futures
and carries a total appropriation of
approximately .$11,000,000.
Hoard-wig or storage of food, fuel
or other necessaries of life in order to
limit the supply or affect prices
would be made a felony under a senate
amendment but farmers who hold
their own products would be excepted.
The amendment restricting futures
trading, written by Senator Nel
sop and voted into the bill, .*>7 to 17,
just before passage, provides:

? Cuts Down Powers.
The senate also voted to curtail the
inquisitorial power given the secretary
of agriculture in the investigation
of food resources. The house bill
would compel the attendance of witnesses
and the submission of books
and other records under heavy penalty.
The senate agricultural committee
amended the provision so as
to eive the secretary general authorisation
to investigate the food situation,
making it the "duty of any person
when requested by tire secretaiy
t.) answer all questions necessary to
carry into effect the provisions of
this section."

Everybody in Lancaster believes in
preparedness, not only the men and
women, but the children as well. The
latest act of preparation pulled of'j

placed for a solid ear of tin cans for
the benefit of the people of the county.
Leave of absence was granted at;

all students who have volunteered for
service in the ambulance corps whic*
is being organized in Columbia.
Owing to the serious illness of Mrs
B. G. Clifford, president of Clifford
seminary, it has been decided that the
seminary will not open next fall.
Senator B. R. Tillman is impatient
to get back to Washington and into
the work in congress. A minor operation
was performed at an Atlanta
sanitarium at the seat of an infection
on the arm contracted several months
ago for the purpose of careting Uninfected
tissue and Dr. Blackman reports
the senator in fine condition
and comfortable. He expects a rapid
recovery. The senator expects to get
back to Washington probably in a
week.

been directed by the Senate agriculture
committee. It substituted the
Lever food bill passed yesterday by
tl e House, providing for a food censtis
and production stimulation, for a
similar bill the Senate has been considering
and added as an ametal^^nt
the bill by Senator Poindoxter, of
Washington, to penalize storage of
foodstuffs, fuel and other necessaries
with intent to limit supplies or en- '
hance the prices.
The bill as amended then was re))oi
ted for debate with an amendment
by Senator Kenyon to exempt farmers
and other original producers from
op ?ratioi? 01 the storage provision.
House appropriations for various
items were generally reduced, bringing
the total of the bill from $l'lAor.

The House hill is the first of the
j food control measures and carries an ^
