curtailed this year and more time de- y
voted to the production of foodstuffs,
Sk T. Morgan, president of the Virginia-Carolina
Chemical Company, (j
and the Southern Cotton Oil Coin- 0
puny, in a press interview, shows ^
that the cotton plant is a tremendous r
food producer, and gives substantial ~
reasons as to why the farmers of the s
South should make it their principal j
crop.
Mr. Morgan was led to come out
publicly against the proposed curtail- f
mcnt of the cotton crop by the ap- t
parent support given this idea by a
President Wiison himself. In his ad? ii
dress to the American people, the
President expressed the hope that the

stuffy along with cotton, but warned 0
Southern farmers against succumb- i
ir.g to the temptation of present high
crtton prices and allowing the plant- t
ing of the staple to curtail the raising
of Tood crops. I
"The boll weevil and the scarcity
of labor in the South," said Mr Mor- 0
jgan, "will accomplish naturally all L
the. curtailment in the cotton crop <
that the country can stand. To urge a
further curtailment is to invite the y
gravest danger, because cocton is es

In m.y opinion, the serious cur
taiiment of the cotton crop of th?
flouth would be a calamity from the
standpoint of its food producing
value alone.

THE FIRST STEP
Usually the first indication of a
lowering of health is found in the
bowels and liver. Something goes
wrong?we eat too much, or work
too hard?and the bowel action
weakens or the liver is sluggish.
That heavy feeling on arising in
the morning, dryness of the
throat, with bad taste, a slight
headache, dull eyes?all show that
food has fermented in the intestines,
and that the body is manufacturing
poisons instead of
good blood.
Clear it all out. Give the
stomach and bowels a fresh start.
; Encourage the liver to go to
work. Mar.Min does all of this,
without griping or weakening.

Berlin.?A confidential statement "
in regard to the progress of submarine
warfare has been made by Vice
Admiral von Capelle, minister of
navy, to the Reichstag main committee
in the discussion of the naval
budget.
An official statement regarding
the minister's communication few*
given out here today showing thatlie
told the committee the success of the
submarines continued to be great and
their losses small. ^
Reports already at hand showed
that a favorable result could bp expected
for the month of April. The
reduction of tonnage at the disposal
of hostile nations, he said, was taking
place with mathematical certainty,
thereby increasing the lack of foodstuffs.
The minister continued:
"Notwithstanding the sharp Ansorship
in Entente countries, ^Wficicnt
news has reached us to show
that the U-boats have hit a vital ^
nerve of England, and through hor,
of her allies. The (London) Morning
Post of April says the number of
English boats really sunk has b en
kept secret, but that the scales are
inclining towaid Germany and that
this gain probably will increase in
mathematical progression. Th?? >u
significant. The navy has fully
realized the expectations on whi h
the proclamation of the sea barrijr
was based, and it has no doubt that in |
a conceivable time England will suffer
the consequences." >
