Washington.?The navy is short 5,514 men of its present authorized niisted strength of 74,500 and efcrts to speed up recruiting are being edoubled. This month has seen the irgest recruitment o.i record, with a ct increase oi 1,04 7. binee Cjngresa uthorized the 7 4,500 total in Sepember, 5,454 men have been added o the navy's presonnel. It was stated today that the anhorized strength is sufficient to put .11 ships immediately available in ommission, and no effort will be pared in bringing the force to that igure. To induce recruiting, Congress pro. rided that 100 enlisted men a year ihould be selected by examination or appointment to the naval fCOatteny. Naval officials say that a^vefy ugh type of officer material is be us; ootametf 11\ this fashion. The way to commissions is tlve ma'ine corps and the responsible arm veil paitI positions us warrant or petty officials is also being* opened is fully as possible to boys who en ist. OB1TUAFY. In loving remembrance of our dear Papa, Mr. Benjamin B. Vereen, born A.ug. 16th, lb47, entered into rest Feb. 22, 11M7. A sad month has passed since we laid in the grave me of our dearest treasures we had in this world. Home is desolate without him. He was a kind husband and loving father. Was loved by all who knew him. But God gives us comfort* and now, O, Father, help us to say Thy will be done; for whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth. Our dear mother proceeded him to the grave in October 1916. They were laid to rest in the family cemetery at Bear Bluff, Rev. Rhoads conducting the funeral exercises, assisted by Rev. Nixon.
