MARION WELCOMES
JOHNSON ENGINEERS
Company Has Made Fine Name
for Itself on the Mexican
Border.
EFFICIENT BODY OF MEN
IN SERVICE ON BORDERj
Will be Blustered Out a;
Promptly as Possible.
Reception Saturday.
Marion.?C n.pany A, South Caro- j
lina Engineeis, known as "The Johnsen
Engineers," reached Marion
their home station, Feb. 10 at 10 *a.
m.. when a preat body of citizens
met them at the station and welcomed
them "back home." Company A
is a fine body of men, who made ar
excellent name for themselves on the
Texas border. Army officials pro
nounced them the most efficient bod*
of men in this particular branch ot |
the service on the border.
There are about seventy-five mei
in the company, and it is officered
efficiently by Capt. J. Roy Pennell,
. of Belton; Lieut. Jas. M. Martin, of
Maron; Lieut. A. G. Kennedy, of
Union, and Lieut. Jos. W. Barnwell,
of Charleston.
Immediately after leaving the station
the men marched through the
streets of the city to the old opera
house, where they are making their
home. The city council recently advised
the government that this hall
could be used by the "Johnson Engineers"
as an armory, and it is admirably
fitted for that use. Saturday
evening at Graham's Hall, the
people of Marion served the soldier
boys with a fine banquet and at
that time a formal welcome was
extended to them.
While but few of these soldiers are

men luiutes, uie company Having been
made up of picked men from all
parts of the State, Marion feels that
she is a proud mother of the whole
company. Marion is the home station,
because J. Monroe Johnson, of
this city, at the request of Governor
Manning, vent to Columbia and by
his personal efforts raised the company,
a:ul had it placed in service.
When organ/ied and given the official
designation of Company A,
South CaroV'na Engineers, the men
by a vote promptly dubbed themselves
"The Johnson Engineers," in
honor of the man who urged them in
to the service of their country. .
Capt. J. M Graham, United States
arrny, arrived in Marion Thursday
night and as soon as the papers of
the company have been made ready,
the medical examinations mmlo
the paymaster has come and paid off,
the company will he mustered out.

IMVEKSITY NOTES.
The students here on the campus
have been very busy preparing and
standing their examinations.
We regret to report that Frank
ireen has boon a little indisposed
for the past few days. He is now
oming aiound and seems to be very
nuch improved.
While mentioning the sick list we
nigin also add that our good friend,
vVilson Lawrimore, has been confined
t.) his room for the past few days
with a case of grippe. We are sorr\
indeed to know this as Wilson neve)
forgets his friends down on the cam>us
when he is able to get around.
We have been having some cold
?veather here in Columbia for the
past few days. We certainly hope
that our good friends in Horry have
not lossed all of their tobacco plants
ecause of the cold snap. Especially
does this wish apply to Frank Thomp
son, who says that Conway is going
to have a bu. tobacco season this
year, and that the price is going to
bo higher than ever.
The University basketball team recently
met and defeated the fast
quintette representing the Porter
Military Academy of Charleston.
The lads showed considerable class
and it was a hard struereie before
Carolina nosed them out.
Hon. L. B. Singleton an alumnus
of the University was in Columbia a
few days this past week. The Horry
boys here on the campus as well as
his other numerous friends were glad
indeed to see "Sing" and trust that
he will again visit them.
The writer listened with interest
t?> the address of Hon. Jeremial
Smith a few days ago. Mr. Smit!
came to Columbia to represent Horry
at the meeting held here recently i;
the interest of state wide, bone dry
air tight prohibition. He made ?
most earnest and eloquent plea be
fore the members of the committee
for the passage of this measure
which if passed would mean death
and destruction to John Barleycorn
Col. C. P. Quattlebaum was alsc
present, and he, too, came as a rep i
Horry is being most ably repiCscnted
this year in both the senate
and house by her able delegations in
each respective branch. In the sen
ate Horry has a most able man ii
Hon. Hal L. Buck. This is Mr.
Buck's second term and from th?
number of times h's name appear
in the list of committees of the senate
it can be easily seen that he is a
prime favorite with his colleagues
He also has many friends in the lower
branch of the general assembly.
He has been very busy indeed since
he came up for the session but
always finds time to greet his young
friends from the University. In the
House of Representatives Hon. Waterman
M. Booth, and his colleague
Hon. Walter L. Mishoe are at all
times on the job. Mr. Booth is ever
present at every roll call and does
not fail to record a vote on every
matter that comes before the house.
He is at all times actively engaged in
looking after the interests of the
farmers as well as any other matters
that per til in to the state and Horry
especially. In Walter Mishoe Horry
has one of the most promising legislators
that ever represented the In
dependent Republic here. His name
appears on the most important committees
of the house, and though he
i > a new man his work as such has
been most commendable. With this
trio to look after their interests the
tax payers of Horry County may
rest assured that they have among
the best in stock and so long as they
travel at the gate seat, there will he
no cause for regret among their
many friends and well wishers back
in Horry.
With our best wishes to the Horry
Herald and its manv readers.

which these buildings face and employees
and others having business in
them must not only show their
passes, properly made out, but they
must approach the one entrance
which will be open and enter the

be made a3 safe as it is possible for
human ingenuity to devise.
It is probable that these regulations
will into effect immediately
and with the stringent rules in operation
at the capitol, where it will
now be impossible for any one to en:or
without a pass, it may be seen
that there is fear lest some of thrgovernment
buildings might suffer.
It is impossible to get naval offices
to talk for publication and what-1
ever news gets out is censored strictly
before being given to the press,
hut the fact that the buildings just'
mentioned are soon to be cut off
from all except those with passes and
that even for them the most stringent
regulations will be enforced,
leads to the belief that the authorities
are far from satisfied with the
present situation.
