If the Adamson law does not prevent railroads from abolishing "trip" wage scales, the railroads ' brief states, the employers must also have the right to reduce the mileage "day's work" schedule to 80 mi'os a day and reduce the pay for such mileage. Washington.?Inadequate and even contradictory reports concerning Villa's operations in Mexico have bewildered administration officials, and, it is believed, resulted in the delay in ordering the withdrawal of General Pershing's forces. One report received at the state department today said the Carranza forces had dispersed the Villa bands in the Parral district. Another said Villa had begun an attack on Chihuahua City. Both reports were from state department agents. The war department was without any special reports from General Funston, who yesterday completed an inspection of the punitive expedition. News dispatches that quoted liim as saying that no raids on the American border appeared probable, and that in the event of the withdrawal of General Pershing's force there would be available sufficient regular troops to forestall any hostile movements from Mexico, were cuken as an indication that the general might renew his recommendation that the troops be brought cut of Mexico. o NOTICE. AU>, CONWAY, 8. 0. ; HOW TO CHOOSE THE | POTATO FOR EATING | Expert Names Points Which Should Be Kept in Mind by Prudent Housewives. i The following suggestions to he use ( i wives by some economic specialists \ tiie United States department of agriculture are made in regard to ihe selection of potatoes l'or table use: In purchasing potatoes for table purpose^ the following points should be kept in mind: First, that smooth potatoes are more desirable than rough ones, because they are more easily prepared, and less loss is involved in the paring. Second, thai tubers which have been exposed to light for any considerable period soon acquire a more or less acrid. taste; for this reason, newly harvest-! ed potatoes, if mature, are preferable for the winter's supply to those which have been kept for any considerable period under unsuitable conditions. Third, that very large i potatoes are not especially desirable, partly on account of the greater length of time required to cook j them uniformly, and partly because i they are often very variable in tex' turc. Fourth, a good potato should | be firm and crisp when cut, and a thin cross section when held between, the eye and the light should show a relatively uniform distribution ot starch throughout its whole area, as | opposed to a large, translucent, j watery, central area which denotes ' a lack of starch in this portion of the tuber. The even distribution of starch insures greater uniformity in cooking and in texture of the flesh when cooked. If a lot is not uniform, it is often worth while to sort them and use the I large ones with roast meats or at I other times when the oven need not be especially heated, and save the small ones for occasions when quick cooking is more convenient. When the potatoes are very large, or time is pressing, it is often desirable to increase the surface exposed to the heat by cutting tlime in pieces be fore cooking, in spite of the fact that this slightly increases the amount of nutrients lost. If they are pared i and cut into small cubes or thin - slices, they will cook very quickly r and may then be creamed, mashed or served in other ways. o j . New York.?The Russians apparently still are on the offensive along .he Roumanian front. Berlin in its official report today records on aggressive activities by the Teutonic porces, except for a raiding operation m the Moldavian frontier, while mentioning the repulse of a strong attack by the Russians in the Oituz valley region. On the Franco-Belgian front the hiving back of the British near Boos after an advance in connection with n mine explosion is reported by the German staff. The recent British attack near Serre was made upon an advanced position which had been evacuated by the Germans, it is declared, the British attacking after the empty trenches had been bombarded for svcoral days. On the naval side of the war interest centers in the operations of the German sea raider in the south Atlantic which has sunk or captured at least l'\ entente merchant vessels, and so far as is known is still at large. Latest reports were that the .... - - < i iomcr apparently was working north ward to lanes of steamship travel more frequented. Nenrly a score of entente warships are said to he searching for her. No News of Yarrowdale. No news has been received of the whereabouts of the steamer Yarrowdale, said to have on board the crews o,? several ships sunk or captured by the raider, in ad lition to the 237 men landed at Pernambuco by a Japanese steamer. It is generally admitted that the raider may possibly enjoy a long immunity, as it is recognized that it is easier to find a needle in a hay stack than a ship bent on eluding capture in the Alantic. Anxiety is expressed in London over the fate of cargoes of grain and meat from Argentine and steel from the United States. It is admitted that; the loss of such cargoes may be severely felt coming on top of the depredations o,f the submarines. A number of steamers, distinct from the victims of the raiders, are posted at Lloyds as missing.
