WEEVIL MEETING WELL ATTENGED Mrs. G. H. Mathis Enlightens and Warns the Farmers of Barnwell County SAYS STOP WITH COTTON AND RAISE OTHER CROPS Other Crops and Livestock liaising' Only Way to Get Ahead of the Pest. Barnwell.?A large and appreciative auiiience attended the boll weevil convention held here yesterday '1 no court hosue was crowded. Tne meeting- was called to order by P. ivi. Buckingham, who introduced Mr. Libble, the president of the Bank of Western Carolina. Mr. Dibble presided and introduced Mis. G. H. Mathis, who happened to be the only one who spoke, the others, for some unaccountable reason, being absent. .Mrs. Math is is an interesting- and elective speaker. She is intensely in earnest, and held her audience spell-bound for nearly two hours. She wasted no time on a dry history of the boll weevil's movements for the past twenty years, but at once tcok up the subject in a concrete way. She dilated upon the ravages of the weevil in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and painted a vivid picture of the ravaged districts new almost depopulated. She next described the way in which the insect migrated, its mode of attack, and the methods used to combat it by picking and trapping. She strong ly emphasized the futility of attempting to arrest it. It could not bo fought successfully, therefore, the only thing to do was to plant something else besides cotton, she said. >\Sth convincing statistics she pointed out the serious thriftness of the South. Mi's. Mathias described humorous 1> the strenuous efforts the Southern farmer made to keep down grass, which is one of the most profitable crops in the country. She show ed that the South paid every year a billion dollars for food and feed, all of which it could easily make at home. She next took up hog raising, mentioned the requisites for success and proved by statistics that this was one of the most profitable of occupations. She appealed to the merchant and the banker, showing t'.iat they wore primarily responsible for the campaign of diversification, because thoy furnish food and fun.Is to the farmer. She closed with a touching panegyric on farm life. Mrs. Mathis' speech is considered one of the best that has ever beer made in Barnwell, and it is hoped that much good will result from it. o DRIVING OUT CATARRH If people knew how the presence of catarrh is a constant menace, thoy would have none of it. It infests sonio part of the delicately adjusted body and makes it useless, thus throwing on tho other organs more than their share of work. It affords a carefully prepared seedbed for the germs of colds, grip, tuberculosis and pneumonia. It so disarranges Nature's delicate plans as to make possiblo asthma, hay fever and other respiratory disorders. It spreads until it becomes systemic, thus involving many organs and debilitating the entire system with serious results. Catarrh is easily neglected, and it rarely gets well of itself. It needs proper medicinal correction. For almost half a century many thousands have found help in Pe1 runa, a valuable tonic with special efficacy in catarrhal conditions. The aim is to clean out waste matter. to dispel tho catarrhal inflam- I manor., ana tone up the whole sys*ts UHCI'a willingly testify that It has dono xi 11 this and oven ir1 ore for catarrhal sufferers.
