IMPROVING POTATOES

New Varieties Developed From
Seed?Will Suit Conditions
Prevailing.
The department is conducting a
number of potato investigations,
chiefly at Presque Isle, Me.; Greeley,|
Colo.; Jerome, Idaho; and Norfolk,
Va. One of the main features of the
work is the development, from seed.
of new varieties of potatoes specially
suited for certain purposes and adapt
eu to tne special growing regions in
which such products can most economically
be produced. A large num-1
ber of seedlings have been grown!
and those of greatest promise only
retained, of which there are some 300
considered of sufficient value to warrant
further testing. These are being
tried out in cooperation with the
various State stations, and as soon
as they have proven their worth in
any locality arrangements will be
made to establish the variety in the
region to which it is best adapted.
Experiments leading to a determination
of the factors necessary for
the production of disease-free pota*
toes in western irrigated sections
have shown that organisms capable
of causing diseases of potatory are
probably present in all desert lands,
but that land previously in cultivn-j

when disease-free seed is planted,
produce a crop comparatively free
from disease. In southern Idaho the
experimnets on the control of powdery
dry rot in storage have been
completed and show that the losses
can be prevented by careful harvesting
to avoid mechanical injuries and
b> keeping the storage cellar at a
temperature between 35 degrees and
40 degrees F., with proper ventila-j
tion. When it is necessary to store
in poorly ventilated or improperly
cooled houses the disease may be effectively
cheeked by disinfection
with corrosive sublimate or formaldehyde,
provided this is done within
24 hours after digging. Further sur
veys nave indicated that the powdery
scab disease is confined to six sections
of the United States, all of
these being northern except one locality
in Florida. In every case
these areas are in sections with considerable
rainfall, where soil conditions
are such that poor drainage
nrevails. It has been found that the
disease can be lessened by the application
of seed and soil treatments

for tae farmer to use in killing
weevils. It is a colorless liquid,
which on exposure changes into e.
gas which is heavier than air, and'
with an odor very similar to spoiled
eggs. In handling this material, th"
same care should be exercised as in
handling gasoline, as an explosion
will result if fire is brought too |
near. To fumigate a barrel of seed j
a half tea cup full of the liquid!
should be placed on top of the com |
in the barrel. Do not pour it overj
the seed. Set the eup containing the)
liquid on the seed, and then cover
the barrel with old sacks with
weights on the top to hold them in
place. 1 It is necessary that the barrel
be as near air tight as possible in
order that the gas will not escape
too soon, or before there has elapsed
enough time for the weevils to be
killed. The gas is heavier than air,
and as soon as it forms, it settles
down in the bottom of the barrel, i
penetrating the whole pile of corn or j
seed. The barrel should remain covered
for about forty-eight hours,;
after which the covering, but not the .
wire gauze. All the weevils will be
killed, and by examining the corn or
sced>from time to time, other applications
can be made as weevils ap- j
pear. The Carbon Bisulphide can be;
purchased in 1-pound cans from'
most any drug stores. At present it
is retailing for about fifty cents per
pound, but this is of minor importance
to that of loosing all the seed
after taking the time and trouble to
i select them.

The guess in this case might
be correct, but there are many other
cases in which the guess will be
wrong. What combination of crops
seems to be best for your farm ? In
what ways car you cut down vsur.
cost of production? Of marketing?
Is your business better than it was
last year, or the year before, or five
years ago ? These are some of the
things a farmer ought to try to find
out about just as earnestly as a merchant
or a banker tries to find out
about similar things in his business,
j Keep accounts. This does not
mean estimating what labor, or machinery,
or animal power "ought" to
cost for a certain crop. It is not
much better to make a guess at each
of a few items and then add them
than it is to make one guess at the
whole cost. The thing to do is to
keep a careful, day-to-day record oi
every kind of expense. At the end
of the year, after deducting expenses
plus interest on the investment,
plus value of products used in the
home, one will have loft the farm labor
income, which is generally taken
as an indication of a man's success
or failure.
If a man dose not feel equal to i
opening up a system of accounts for
his whole farm, it is suggested that
he keep the records of just one crop
for the year, accounting for each detail.
The result will probably open
his eyes and lead him to be an allround
business farmer another year.

Victoria Mills, Rock Hill, S. C\, lives
a former operative who owing to
rheumatism was forced to give up
mill work. While incurably deformed

doubting the following statement resulting
from intensive work on the
one-acre tract about his home
where he has lived for nine years.
While previously fond of the soil
he accomplished no extraordinary
results until the Demonstration
Work was placed at the Victoria Mill
in 1913. Since that time he has
made a splendid living for himself
and family on the one acre of land
worked by himself. His assets consist
of a cow, for which he raised all

PROHIBITION TO AID.
Paris.?Total prohibition throughout
France of the consumption of
such alcoholic beverages as whiskey,
brandies and liquors has been decided
upon by the government.
This is shown by the text in the
Journal's official statement today of
Premier Briand's declaration yesterday
before the chamber of deputies.
The Premier said:
"The government will ask you to
give it the facility of solving by decree
all questions of interest in regard
to the national defense which
the laws are too slow to regulate. It
is apparently a grave question
which can be regulated only in war
time, the solution of which the life
of the country and its salvation is
the total suppression of the consump
tion of alcohol."
The Premier's remarks were greet
ed with loud applause from many of
the benches. Deputy Mayeras interjected:
"In the army also?"
"Yes, in the entire country," said
the Premier.
The use of the terms alcohol is understood
in France to include such
beverages as absynthe, which, however,
has been suppressed, whiskies,
brandies, and liquors, but not wines
or beers.

BRIEF ITEMS.
Permits for the importation of
127,706 canaries were issued by the
Bio'ogical Survey during the past
year.
The bureau of Soils of the department
last year mapped in detai.
the various soils of 24,749.440 acres
in 7.3 areas in 32 States.
Two thousand bluebill and 300
white-winged scoter ducUs were
found to destroy 8.000 oysters a day
in a single bay near Olympia, Wash.
For correcting soil acidity, 1 ton
of burned lime is practically equal to
1 1-2 tons of slaked lime or 2 tons
of ground limestone, in case all
three forms are of equal grade of
purity.
Successful methods for the control
of the foot-rot of sweet potatoes,
a serious and destructive disease
in several States, have been developed
by the specialists of the department.
The Bureau of soils is cooperating
with the cement mills, blast furnaces,
and wool scourers with the
object of enabling them to recover
potash as a by-product wherever
this proves to be commercially feasible.
In 1904 the actual cash road and
bridge expenditure in the United
States averaged slightly less than
$28 per mile of rural roads. In 1915
the cash road and bridge expenditure
had increased to an average of
$109 per mile of road.
Practically no injury to alfalfa
from suivtmer heat has been recordon
in dry climates, but high temperatures
combined with much moisture j
in the atmosphere are so injurious
that it is difficult to grow the crop
successfully under these conditions.
The pasturing of corn is especially
applicable to semiarid regions. The
dry soil is not injured by the animals,
and very little corn goes to
wa^ste or spoils by coming in contact
with the soil. The stalks are
left in good shape to prevent the
drifting of snow.
Tho most practicable means of
controlling grasshoppers is by the
use of poisoned-bran baits or the
modified Criddle mixture.
The golden plover of the Pacific
Ocean migrates from Alaska to the

Extensive researches by plant
pathologists of the department upon
the development of crown galls upon

many points of resemblance to human

CANE SYRUP EXPERIMENTS.
Experiments to improve methods
for making cane syrup are in progress,
according to the recently issued
report of the Chief of the Bureau
of chemistry The object of
this work is to produce a high-grade
cane sirup of a bright, uniform color
which will not ferment or crystalize.
As a result of laboratory work, a
method has been developed, though
not yet applied on a large# scale, by
which a pure cane sirup can be made
which will not crystalize or ferment.
This method will be tried out experimentally
on a commercial scale
this fall, and if it proves satisfactory
a description of the process wil
be published by the Department of
Agriculture.

central Arkansas, which was swept

probably ten persons were killed and
that a score of others may have lost

Much apprehension was felt here
today regarding the fate of the State
convict farm at Tucker, where there
were 325 State prisoners. The farm

the storm's path, and as all wire connection
with it was lost, it was feared
some of the convicts might have
escapori during the confusion.

Good stable manure is one of the
most satisfactory top-dressings for
alfalfa. It should be applied in the
late fall or early winter and distributed
evenly. Where manure is
not available, 300 to 400 pounds per
acre of acid phosphate will nearly
always give good results.
