SATS NOW IS TIME
TO PROPOSE PEACE
Entente Cannot Now Say Desire
For Peace Shows Germany's
Weakness
FALL OF BUCHAREST
PROVES OTHERWISE
If Atttempt Should Fail Germany
Could Go Ahead with
Clear Conscience
Berlin.?The Socialist newspaper
Vorwaerts in an editorial on the capture
of Bucharest says the chief sig*
nificance of the victory lies in the
disproof it furnishes of the Entente
assertions that Chancellor von Beth
mann-Hollweg's expressed willingness
to make peace is dictated by
Germany's weakness.
The newspaper argues that the
present moment is especially suited
to further efforts for peace as the
Teutonic conquests in Rumania mark
further Entente talk about Germany's
weakness ridiculous.
"The people are lied to" continues
the article, "when they were told
that Germany was about to break
down. They were lied to when they
were told that Germany wantel peace
in order to escape sure defeat and
cheat her enemies out of a certain
victory." It asks who can, after Bucharest,
dare interpret German peace
speeches as "signs of weakness."
The article concludes:
Never has peace been talked louder
or more passionately in Germany
than during the past weeks, yet precisely
these weeks have matured
what probably is the most wonderful
success Germany has achieved during
the war. Foreign governments
lack the courage to make peace. The
German government can and must
have it. It must manifest that courage
until the peoples on the other
side sweep away the governments
which can neither win victories nor
conclude peace.' * * The attempt
mu&t be made and if it fails through
the obvious fault of others, then we
can go on with a good conscience until
the next time, and our soldiers
will resume their march."

FARMERS WARNED TO
SECURE COTTON SEED
Washington.?The United States
bureau of plant industry has advised 1
cotton growers to make certain of
their supply of seed for planting
next season.
"All kinds of cotton seed are likely
to be scarce at planting time next
spring," said the statement. "The unpieccdented
prices now being paid at
the oil mills may tempt rnai y farmers
to cut down their reserves of
planting seed or to sell all of it perhaps
with the idea of being able to
buy seed of a betier variety for v,ni>
a little more than the mills are now
paying for ordinary gin-run seed.
vVhile it is always desirable to replace
an niferior stock with a better
one, it would be well to make sure of
the good planting seed as soon as
possible.
"Another danger to the seed supply
lies in the possibility that glowers
who have good seed of different
varieites may think it easier to sell
it at once to the oil mill instead of
holding it to sell for planting. This
is a special danger in connection
with the new early maturing long
staple varieties. As only limited
supplies of good seed of these varieties
are in existence, it may be urged
that all of this should be saved fo:
planting purposes."

RUSTING MACHINERY
A 6REAT LOSS
Clemson College, S. C.?All farm
implements should now be under
shelter and be put in first class condition
for next season. The bindershould
be repaired now and not
when you are ready to begin work.
Delay at harvest time may mean the
loss of many dollars. The same
principle holds true for all other
farm machines.
Too many farmers are careless
with the equipment which makes
farming a paying business. In every
section of the *3tate farm machinery
can be seen out in the weather fot
weeks and months at a time. Such
practices eat up the profits of the
farm. What would the farmer think
of the manufacturer who neglected
his machinery? The manufacture
would be a mighty poor business'
man, yet the farmer, who is the]
greatest producer, allows his much-J
ines to rust and go without care.
Every farmer should have a place1
to store his machinery. A small.
building of simple construction, lo-1
cated between the house and barn.1
is best. A long shed not more than
lb feet wide, provided with continu
ous doors along one side, is more c<
vnninnf '
. u/i iciiit'viug
than a wider building*. A small shop
included at one end is a great con
venienco in keeping implements i
repair.
When the implements are brough
in from the field inspect them ve>\*
carefully and note all repairs need
ed on a tag and tie it on the implement.
Carefully elea ? and oil a)
bearings and look over the woodor j
p-.vts. If the paint is becoming won 1
put on a new coat to prevent the i
wood from shrinking or swelling
Place the machine under shelter ami
remove the tag when all repair?
have been made in first-class condition.
Proper maintenance and protection
of farm machinery in South
Carolina would mean millions of dol ,
lars in the pockets of the farmers
each year.
