DANGERS OF A COLD
Conway People Will Do Well to Heed

Many bad cases of kidney trouble
result from a cold or chili. Congested
kidneys fall behind in filtering the
poison-laden blood and backache,
headache, dizziness and disorderd kid
ney action follow. Don't neglect a
cold. Use Doan's Kidney Pills at thei
first sign of kidney trouble. Follow
this Conway resident's example:
J. T. Proctor, farmer, Conway,
says: "I had pains in my back and
loins. At times I had headaches and
dizzy spells, during which my sight
blurred. The kidney secretions were
often too frequent in passage, break
ing my rest at night. Colds settled
on my kidneys and made my back
worse. I used Doan's Kidney
pills as directed, procuring them
from the Norton Drug Co., and they
relieved all signs of the trouble."

LONDON HOTELS
MUST CUT MENUS
Trade Interests Warned to'
Put Ban on Extravagance.
London.?Walter Uunciman, president
of the Board of Trade, addressing"
a crowd of leading" London
hotel keepers last night, demanded
an immediate curtailment of menus.
He declared that there must he an
immediate and drastic cutting down,
and a decrease in the use of imported
foods. "1 have just seen," he
said, "a specimen of a Christmas
menu, which is being circulated as
an advertisement by a leading London
hotel. Such an elaborate program
would be wasteful even in
peace times and is a little short of
scandalous in war time. Such a circulation
can not be allowed. All
menus must be drastically cut down,
and there must bo one or two fishlcss
and meatless days weekly. There
must be an immediate decrease in
USe of iniliiirlod frw\,lu W'i'la I ^ I
especially noticeable in the use ot
expensive cakes and confections. If
the trade interests will not take the
necessary action, the government
must force them to do so." Aftei
the meeting, the Savoy hotel announced
the cancellation of its spe
cial Christmas and New Year's dinners.
TO AROUSE PUBLIC
London.?The morning papers at
tach the greatest importance to tin
program just announced of address
es in the various cities in Croat Brit
a in by leading members of the cabi
net.
It is stated the addresses are in
tended to gain the support of tlv
public for a more vigorous prosecution
of the war and thus to combat
the anti-war propaganda in industrial
centers. It is believed that
Premier Asquith, Lloyd George, Bonar
Law and Reginald McKenna will
participate in a joint meeting of the
Unionists and Liberal war committees
along the same line and that
probably both parties will take official
action in support of the cam|
paign.

PURE SEED RAISES
YIELD AND PROFITS
_____
Clemson College, S .C.?Purebred
seed grain adapted to tho conditions

c.riaily over common or unimproved!
seed. Any farmer can improve his
grain seed at little cost.
A few dollars spent for pure-bred, |
improved seed grain will be suiii-l
oient to grow enough seed to plant
several acres the following year.
This improved seed should be put in
i plot by itself or at one end of the
egu'.ar field. Care should be taken
a harvesting to see that it is kept
eparate from the rest of the grain.
If the main field is growing a dif-j
ferent variety, it is well to put this!
seed in a plot by itself. The seedbed
should be well prepared and
clean. When harvested .the grain
should be well shocked and capped
to avoid damage by the weather.
Phis will insure seed grain of higher
juality and stronger germination.
The next year, the seed produced
n this pure-bred plot may be used
in the general fields and in two season's
time the farmer can ge growing
pure-bred grain. This kind of
grain thoroughly cleaned, treated for
smut and grown on clean land, will
! enlarge the yield and improve the
juality of the small-grain crop, and j
\ larger crop will be obtained at a
it tie increase in the cost of producion.
The sale of pure-bred seed will
nuke a profitable side-line too.

Firo Losses at Hearing
in Columbia.
Columbia, Nov. 24.?Many firo insurance
companies were represented
at the hearing which began this
morning before the commission appointed
recen 1\ by dev. Manning
to investigate the fire insurance situation
and make recommendations
to the legislature for remedial legislation.
The hearing was held to obtain
the attitude of the companies
on the law to be proposed. The sessions
will continue through today
and tomorrow. Several of the companies
sent their attorneys.
At the beginning of the hearing
Commissioner McMaster announced
that a building code had been drafted
by the commission to be submitted
to the legislature. It was also
announced that a fire inquest law
will be proposed. This law would
provide for a thorough examniation
of all fires in the state.
Several of the insurance officials
advocated the repeal of the valued
policy law in South Carolina. It was
also claimed that the taxes are too
high. A progr im of legislation to
reuucc Hie losses was proposed by
the companies. The companies
claimed that because of the big fire
losses, the companies are not making ,
money in South Carolina business.
l'ony Thanks Returned
In behalf of the Home Demonstration
Department of the Fair, I
wish to thank the women of Horry
for their interest in the 4th Annual
Horry Fair. As a farm without
ciops is no farm, just so a Fair with
out exhibits is not a true Fair. We
wish our exhibits to present a true
picture of Horry conditions, to do
this every woman must help.
This year more than ever before
our women have responded, and this
year our Woman's Department was
nearer what we want. The committee
in charge of the various booths
did all they could to make it a success.
1 wish to thank them especially
for their cooperation.
The model sick room, which was
planned and demonstrated by the
Home Maners Club was especially
good, winning first prize. This
shows what our women can do. The
demonstrations in the Model Kitchen
by Mrs. Dora Dee Walker and Miss
Smith were well received. The
school exhibits were good too. We
appreciate the interest some of our
teachers are taking in community
progress.
Let us not bo satisfied with what
we have done this year, but striving
always to go forward, have an exhibit
worthy of our Independent Republic
next year.
Thanking you again for your cooperation,
I am,
i Yours very truly,
Annie M. Derham.
| CARD OF THANKS.
I wish to thank my friends and
neighbors and also Dr. Stalvey for
the kindness shown me during the
illness and death of my husband.
