WACCAMAW BAPTISTS ? PASS'RESOLUTIONS Condemning Recent Action of General fVirwton on ReligWork on Border. '*** ? a .\ Editor Vxutfi. d?>**r>wo > kttu <%sr>rri^ 1 b.g vO iitifiui yrfil the following resolution for publication in yi ur esteemed paper. It was unanimously adopted by the recent session of the Waccamaw Baptist Association in Conway, and its meaning will be clear to all who have noted in the papers the account of the incident referred to on the Texas border. To recall, this incident jbriefly, the Texas Baptist Convention1 i I ... . ? > ilk lOih\ r. . inrougn its mission secretary, ur. j., B. Gambrel, asked d^dWeral Fun-, ston who is over the soldiers on the J Border permission to do evangelistic, work among the soldiers, whereupon he replied that he wanted no excit-1 ing revivals and did not desire that j the men be told that they are lost. Since that time the matter has been taken up by many Baptist conventions and Associations and formal protest issued. In reply to these protests General Funston is reported as saying further: "Baptists who -are distorting the statement of my position regarding the kind of church work in border camp had better put > their property in the names of their wives." The meaning of this .statement may not be clear, but whatever it may mean, Baptists will go on pro j testing against such acts by their public servants which is clearly in violation of their dearlv bouirht and most highly prized hcirtage, religious liberty. The resolution as adopted by the Waecamaw Association follows: Whereas recently, upon application by the Baptists of Texas to General Funston to permit evangelistic work among the soldiers on the Mexican border by the Texas Baptist Convention such permission was denied except on condition that the soldiers be not told that they are lost; and whereas such laying down of conditions for the free preaching of the Gospel by a religious denomination as they understand it is a violation of the principle of religious liberty, therefore be it .Resolved that the Waccamw Association deeply regrets that a general of the U. S. Army would thus wilfully violate a sacred human right and a plain provision of the U. S Constitution, and that this Association earnestly protests againrt such a high-handed act on the part of a public servant. Yours very truly. ?I). L. Hill. o NOTICE.
