TWO I Ubilii JjuESTiONS ONCOTTON SINNING As Applied to South Carolina and Other Long Staple Districts CONDITIONS OF GIN IS FULLY EXPLAINED Condition of the Cotton to be Considered as Important Item. Washington, D. C.?Nov. 1.?The importance of proper handling and ginning of cotton, especially in the i long staple districts, can not be overemphasized. A good staple produced from pure pedigreed seed, if ginned green or damp or with gin saws running tOv> fast may be damaged in value from $5 to $2o or more a baie. The following suggestions are made by the cotton handling specialists of the Office of Markets and Rural Organization, U. S. Department of Agriculture: A iirvl ch Aulil Kn /lr\' I i \ . It is not possible for the ginner to turn out, from green or damp cotton, a good, smooth j sample from gin cutting and nepping. | The farmer who insists on having his : cotton ginned in this condititon has i only himself to blame if the buyers penalize it from $5 to $25 per bale, i In considering the proper ginning of long-staple cotton, several differ-1 ent items demand attention. The condition and shape of the saw teeth are important. A long saw tooth, not too sharp, which will comb rather than cut the cotton from the seed, is preferable to a short, very sharp tooth. Much also depends upon the way the , saw teeth are sharpened. The speed of the saws, the speed of the brush, and the condititon of 1 the gin roll are other important factors. Also the lint should be carried directly from the condenser into the press box. Foot packing makes the sample appear somewhat rough and should be avoided whenever possible. Gin manufacturers agree that a reasonable speed of the saw shaft does not materially affect the quality of ginning provided the brushes remove the lint from the saw teeth. It has been shown, however, that a prop er speed is from 323 to 375 revolutions per minute on a 12-inch saw, and from 375 to 425 revolutions per minute on a 10-inch saw. Brushes should always be kept in the best condititon and should be set so that the bristles reach to the bottom of the saw teeth. The speed of the brush should be I from 1500 to 1600 revolutions per! minute. Whenever nnasihlo o hvnah - ? * ? - U | driven indepedently of the saw shaft ' is recommended. By this arrange- j ment any change in the speed of the j saw shaft does not affect the speed J of the brush. jt Other tilings being equal, it is im- I possible to lay too much stress on the condtiiton of the roll in the ginning of long-staple cotton. It is impossible for the saws to pass through a hard roll without cutting or nepping the fiber. What is known as a slack or soft roll should always be used for ginning long-staple cotton This roll j should be run just hard enough to prevent breaking, and the feed should be adjusted so as to keep it as nearly sis possible of the same consistency throughout its entire length. The huller breast is recommended , in preference to the single rib type for gining long-staple cotton. The chief reason for recommending this type is that a more uniform roll can j bo made and each lock of seed cotton Is more thoroughly loosened before j it reaches the gin roll. The huller : breast also takes out the burrs and j large trash. While these observations pretain' chiefly to the ginning of long-staple cotton, they are equally applicable to the ginning of all cotton on sawgins. ?o Head-Off That All-Winter Cough A A lv. / : A. ? - ? In plowing up the roots the plow should go well enough under them to turn j them up without bruising, and when the potatoes are loaded into baskets, barrels or the wagon bed, instead of being pitched, they should be laid in with the same care that would be used in handling apples.
