TWO
USEFUL BIRDS ARE
RAPIDLY DECREASING
Due to Carelessness, Ignorance
and Greed of Mankind in
Some Respects.
Our useful birds, without the aid
of which it would be impossible to
grow crops successfully, are rapidly
decreasing in numbers. Man in his
various is the main cause of this decrease.
These facts and many others just
as startling are strikingly brought
out in a bulletin entitled, "Decrease
of Birds of South Carolina," issued
recently by the State University.
This very valuable report which
should be widely read and discusses
is a result of an inquiry into the subject
made by the State Audubon Script
v. Thn oviflpnrn vv'ninVi fnrnto it*
basis was furnished by competent,
unprejudiced observers in every part
of the State.
It is the opinion of many of these
observers that the alarming decrease
in our valuable wild bird life is due
in a large measure to the careless-1
ness, ignorance and greed of man.
It is stated that he has tvrned loose
on birds such destructive natural I
enemies as the English Sparrow,
dogs and cats; and that he has
brought to his aid in his direct destruction
improved fire-arms, smokeless
powder, automobiles, etc. A
great many other causes are cited.
In addition to a statement of the
causes of decrease and a discussion
of each, many suggestions are given
for the better "protection of birds.
Most of the observers reporting from
those counties which have the resident
hunting license law, are enthu
siastic in its support. Many express
themselves as anxious to see the law
made state-wide with no exemptions.
Many of the suggestions given are
of vital importance and deserve most
serious consideration on the part of
the public. Dogs roaming at large
during the birds' breeding season ore
considered a great curse to all
ground-nesting birds. Many consider
dove-baiting unsportsmanlike and
suggest that it should be prohibited
by law. South Carolina is advised to
follow the good example set by Georgia
in this respect. Education comes
in for a large share of attention. The
deplorable fact is stressed that the
public is wofully ignorant . of the
value of birds, and the reasons why
they should be protected. One observer
suggests: "Educate the public
as to the value of birds. They will
then demand right laws and their enforcement.
In the opinion of many
bird study should be made compulsory
in the schools.
Every person interested in the material
welfare of the State should
read this report. Single copies may
be had free, by writing to either the
Audubon Society, or the Extension
Department of the State University,
both at Columbia.
