THE HORRY INDUSTRIAL . |
Bright Prospects Under the New
Management of the School.
Mr. Edtior:?I have been deeply
interested in the plans of the new
iiunagement ol the Horry Industrial
School. The new President, Rev. S. C. I
Morris, is y man well qualified for
this important work, and he has tavcn
hold of his new task with energy
uul intelligence. He will soon be
veil-known throughout Horry Coun:y.
While the further building opera- I
tiions have been necessarily delayed,
/et some progress is being made in
raising funds for this cause . As the
School grows other buildings will be
ldded and in time this is destined to ]
t>e an extensive and well-equ\pped
School plant.
Applications for admission into
the School are coming in rapidly, 1
\m informed. Sixteen applications
from prospective students have already
been received from persons
liv/.ig outside of Horry County, be
sides those in Horry. Evidently the j
School will be taxed to its full ca- \
pacity in its boarding department ]
this fall. So every boy and girl who j
wants to attend should make applica- ?
tion at once to Rev. S. C. Morris, ,
Horry, S. C. ,
The Horry Industrial School has ,
bright prospects now, and it is safe ]
to predict for it a future of great ,
usefulness and success. Its growth ,
will bo gradual but sure. I am sure
that Horry County will support the
institution heartily in every way possible.
It will draw its patronage
chiefly from Horry County, but it
will be more than a local institution,
for many will come from adjoining
counties.
T ?U?i 1- -r
i r.u'jYv nitii. mc imjiiiih" in your I
splendid county have the interests of
this school at heart, and no people
will be more appreciative of the work
which thih institution will do there.
And I want to commend Brother
Morris to you and ask for him your
hearty support. I greatly rejoice in
the bright prospects of the Horry Industrial
School, now entering upon a
new era in its career.
Yours truly,
ALBERT D. BETTS,

TO MAKE GOOD JELLY.
The canning-club specialist of the
States Relations Service for the Nor
thern and Western States recommend
that the following points be observed
to make certain that jelly will be
of good duality:
After the fruit has been boiled and
the texture broken down it should be
poured into a jelly bag and perhiit- 1
ted to drain for a considerable time, i
Forcing the juice from the pulp will
cause cloudy jelly. When the juice
has been collected, place two teaspoonfuls
of cold unsweetened fruit '
ill ice in two tpusnnonfllle rvf nrrnin .?1 _
w ? - v?tu VI. " 1
cohol and mix by shaking gently. Allow
it to settle for one half hour, i
preferably in a glass tumbler. If a i
jellylike substance collects in the bot- 1
torn of the mixture it is evident that 1
pectin is present and the juice is i
suitable for jelly making. When the I
test shows absence of pectin, the J
white portion of orange peel, apples,
or green citron melon may be added i
to the juice to supply the necessary i
pectin. 'j'we've ounces of sugar ad- j
ded to a pint of juice will make a i
jelly to be poured into the glass when
two rows of drops form on the end of J
a paddle cr on the edge of a spoon '
held sidewise.

BABY PARALYSIS
SHOULD BE FEARED
Read up on the Subject and
Take Every Precaution

\IO MORE CASES
REPORTED IN COUNTY
Ylore Than One Thousand
Deaths Occurred in New
York City. /"
M
No further case of infantile parilysis
was reported from anywhere
.n this county during last week, and
lp to that time tlie case of the
Roberts child near Ay nor, was
thought to be all; but of course the
sources of infection from which this
originated could not be told. As the
disease attacks mostly the young
children any time from birth to
reaching sixteen years of age, the
danger diminished as they grow
older, the disease is feared as one of
the saddest destroyers; and for the
further reason that though the patient
may recover, ft goes through
life with palsied members. Therefore
cverv nreeaution shonM ho tn_
ken. Up to a recent date more than
one thousand deaths had occurred in
New York city this Summer.
A writer in the Columbia State in
an article last week states as follows:
"Not long ago a Columbia physician
of recognized ability remarked
to the writer of this article: "Medicine
is common sense." Certainly
the practice of some of our doctors
justifies this remark. There was a
day when the medicines were changed
several times before the one suited
to the ailment was decided upon.
Now, no medicine or little is given
until the case has been fully diagnosed.
So since common sense is of
such value in that beautiful profession,
should not our doctors meet the
laity on that ground ?
Infantile paralysis has been studied
for years and little light can be
thrown 6n successful treatment, that
is, doing away with the fearful results
of disease. The physicians are
powerless; so our only hope is in
elimination. Our Sunday schools
must be closed, moving picture theatres
closed, children not allowed to
gather in crowds. Then (to quote
f rrtm tUo 1 ,J-L ' v
..uui vuv uuuiu ul rit-aiin report,;
"avoid contact with persons." Healthy
persons, who are carriers, may
innocently transmit germs they have
in nose or throat by coughing,
sneezing, etc. Again, Dr. Evans of
"Health Hints" fame, who is certainly
entitled to some recognition,
says "Keep away from persons who
have been in contact with the disease
at any time during the last 90 days."
In the face of this, our physicians
go in the thick of the disease where
they can learn nothing which has not
already been given to the profession,
and can certainly not hope to throw
light upon a subject they are themselves
almost entirely unfamiliar
with.
Ten of our nurses are going to the
infected district. Will they be kept
from nursing 90 days after they
leave New York?
A certain age is thought to make
infantile paralysis unlikely, not impossible
since a woman of 30 is reported
to have died of it; but the age
foi conveying the disease is not limited,
and rules for prevention distinctly
set forth "healthy persons
nay be carriers."
Let the nurses go where they are
needed and the doctors, who feel
ailed; but be consistent. Keep those
uirses, and if possible doctors, who
\ave been "thrown closely" with the
iiscase from comfng in contact with
ittle depleted children, until the 90
lays have proved them no longer a
uenacG. Or give us other rules for
he prevention of infantile paralysis.
K."
