WORST SLUMS AT
BANKER'S DOORS
Backyard of Wall Street
In a Deplorable
Condition.
Bowling Croon's Neighborhood Association,
formed a year ago to clean
up one of the worst slums in the city
?the back yard of Wall Street?has
summed up its year's work in a tietermination
to concentrate upon the
children and so educate another generation
in the fear and respect of hotter
civilization, says the New York
Evening Post. For the children are
as thick as the West street flies in
these slums of the financial district)
they sicken and die in double and
treble the proportion of deaths on the
East and West sides of the city. Under
the eyes of the corporation magnates
in the tall buildings of Broadway
these children swarm in toneVw*i

district, made fifty years ago, called
over a hundred years old. The houses
are the low, cavernous wooden buildings,
shored and patched, to which the
original Knickerbockers of two hundred
years ago betook themselves after
transacting their business around the
Battery. The old doorways clearly
show their age, being little more than
trap doors a step or so below the side
walk. The halls are narrow, rickety,
winding passages which have been
boarded up or allowed to fall through
according to hit-or-miss necessity.
Coine down to Washington street,,
one block from the docks, on the West
_Side, and stand at Carlisle street.
This is the center of the district. Thei
old wooden tenements are on every
side. On the vertical fire escapes line
upon line of dingy clothes block the
fire passage. The narrow streets
are full of heavy trucks loaded with

stores are on the street level. Syrians
and Turks, shopkeepers, look suspiciously
at strangers. Syrian laces and
needlework are piled up in the dark
rooms, and all the gew-gaws familiar
in the summer peddler's basket are
scattered about The women look
helf-asleep and sullen. The men have
a disinterested aid and no especial
. kindness toward the little children
who get in their way. Over all is a
small, not the cabbage-laden odor of
peasantry, but a filthy, unsanitary
smell which comes from sewerage and
personal uncleanliness. .

"The mothers of the Washington
street slums put their children in the
care of the street. They have no
other place. The street is full or
waterside trucking. Every day some
child falls und/ir a wagon or is stepped
upon by the dray horses. The
older girls of the neighborhood are
bold and careless. The carousals of
the dockside are their entertainments.
At night the better class of them
dare not go out. Neither can the
mothers let their little children outside
of the door. In a certain larg.?
building, overlooking these streets,
corporation officials made a special
jpeint of warning the office employees
not to walk through the district at
noontime. To be sure, it is unpleasant
on a lunch hour stroll to step on
a dead cat in a doorway or to be followed
up the street by a drunken
Chinaman.

Strosahl of Grundy Center, Iowa, pur
chased the Pinson farm in Greenwood
county, containing 221 acres.

bill last Friday, President
Wilson presented the pen with which
he signed the measure to Representative
A. F. Lever, of South Carolina,
chairman of the House committee on
agriculture. The President also took
i occasion to write Mr. Lever a letter;

able to do for the agricultural interests
with the aid of Mr. Lever and I
