RESCUERS RECOVER
BODIES FROM FLOOD
Charleston, W. Va., Aug. 10.?
Twenty-three bodies have been recov
ered from the debris carried down by
the flood which swept Cabin Creek
valley near here yesterday, following
a cloudburst which left in its wake a
death toll estimated at more than 100
persons and a property loss of at
least $2,000,000. Because of the topography
of the country State authorities
.here expressed the belief that it
would be several days before the full
extent of the' flood could be ascertained.
At least eight villages and mining
^settlements in the district were either
wholly or partly destroyed while
many others felt the effects of the
storm more or less. Those practically j
destroyed or badly damaged were
Acme, Honda, Dry Branch, Miami,
Sharon, Dames, Kayford and Eskdale
Between Acme and Kayford GO persons
are reported to have been,
drowned. ? i 1 j
Rescue parties have penetrated
some distance above Cab^n creek
junction and meager reports brought
back by couriers and from the rail-1
roads, indicate that the loss of life
A** been heavy. Persons driven rfom
ithelr homes to the mountains are returning
to find whole villages of
limning cabins swept away, while dis-'
tress and suffering is seen on every
friand.

DARLINGTON COUNTY'S
HONORED SON
We deem it a privilege to call attention
to the clean and manly race
which Darlington's son, Julius S. McInnes,
is making in his candidacy for
Congress from this district, and it is
gratitying to be able to state that he
has made a most favorable impression
in every county;
Confining himself in his speeches
on the stump to a discussion of the
issues and problems of the day;
standing squarely on the Democratic
platform, pledging loyal support to
the Administration, Mr. Mclnnes has
declined to be drawn into any personal
controversy with either of his
opponents, and has not indulged in
abuse, ridicule or personalities.
This is as it should be, and the sup
port which Mr. Mclnnes is receiving
is an indication of a healthy public
sentiment. Darlington County may
well be proud of the enviable reputation
which Mclnnes has made for
himself, and should give substantial
evidence of its pride and appreciation
by casting practically a solid vote
for him on the 29th instant. The
number of those who are rallying to
Mclnnes' snnnnrf ir? fk A)? nAiintiof I
? v in V VUV1 WUII HCi"5
will doubtless stimulate his friends
at home to redouble their effort.
The editor of The News and Press
has had the privilege of reading a
number of private letters to Mr. McInnes
and his friends, bringing the
news that the tide of public sentiment
is running strongly iVi his favor
in all sections of his ditrict, which
causes his friends to feel that his
strength is even greater than they
at first had hoped for.
This support is the more gratifying
from the fact that it is purely
voluntary, and the fact that Mclnnes,
who was practically unknown outside
of this fOlint.V whon firef nn
nounced his candidacy, has so conducted
himself as to warrant enthusiastic
efforts in his behalf on the
part of good men and true in all
parts of the district, is a high tribute
to his character and worth.
Now is the time for the citizens of
Darlington to show their appreciation
of what other counties are doing
to honor one of their fellow-citizens.
