French troops north of Hem wood in
the Soinme Sector is announced in an
oilieial statement issued by French
war ofhee. Rain and mist have impeded
the operations north of the
Sonime. South of the river a German
reconnaissance using liquid fire
was dispersed by the French infantry
fire west of Vcrman/oillers.
Only intermittent cannoning in
the neighborhood of Floury, Vaux
and Chapitre is reported from the
Verdun sector. Fifteen battles in the
air took place yesterday on the
Somme front. One German aeroplane
is reported to have been destroyed
and two forced to descend inside the
French lines. French machines drop-!
ped 413 bombs on various railroad
stations.
British Front Quiet.
London?"Last night was generally
quiet along our front except for;
neavy hostile shelling of our lines
southeast of Trones wo>d," says the
official statement issued here. "North
west of Pozieres wo made further
progress, gaining all our local objectives,
which are now being consoli
dated. Seventy-two prisoners were
taken.
"South of Arras wo raided a sap of
the enemy and inflicted several casualties.
A similar attempt by the enemy
against our trenches northwest of
Hulluch met with no success.
"The enemy exp'oded a mine south
of Loos with no effect."

On July 13, 191(1, death claimed for
its own Mr. W. H. Lawrence. He was
04 years, 3 months and 12 days old. i
He was sick 12 months and 2 weeks i
and hearing his sickness with greatest
of patience. O, how hard it was to
give him up, but the good Lord
knew best and took him to that
bright and happy homo where there
will be no more sorrow, or pain. All
v/as done for him that loving hands
and kind hearts could do but could
not stav the icy hand of death. Our
Heavenly Father knew that dear fath
er stayed here, in this cold world long
enough. He loaves a wife and four
children. Two children by his first
wife and two by his last wife, and a
host of surviving friends to mourn
his death.

Walter D. Brwon, formerly voice

Mrs. Louis Clark of Columbia has

and Miss Lucy Mondy of Tennessee

Columbia Theological seminary is
preparing to offer attractive quarters
to the greatly increased number
of students expected at the opening
of the seminary September 20.
One case of infantile paralysis was
reported to the State board of health
last week from Aynor. Thirty-three
cases have been reported since July
1 in the State. Should the situation
| grow serious, plans already formulated
for the establishment of a
strict quarantine about the State will
be put into eiTect.
Three cases of infantile paralysis
were reported to the State board of
health Tuesday, one from Perry, one
from Springfield, one from Horry,
and one from Iva. This makes a to-j
tal of twenty nine cases since July l.j
