It is stated by some that the showers following the storm have made the damages to crops less than they would have been as the damp cloudy weather was a remedy to some extent of the scalding process caused by the hot sun. o In this issue is the card of Mr. J. W. Johnson, announcing his canrfHdi^cy for reelection to the office of Magistrate in Dog Bluff township, known as District No. 4. Mr. Johnson has held this office for a penied of twenty-two years, with exception of a short time of two years that the position was filled by W. B. Carroll. He has a record in this office that is hard to beat in the experience of any. Larrimore died aw his home near Jordanville on July 2nd, after an illness of several weeks, at the age of 82 years and six mentis; and was buried the following day at Antioch Burying ground. He served four years in the Con- \ federate war. He connected himself with the Methodist church in early life and lived a consecrated Christian life unHe is survived by a widow,'$6 years of age, and one son, Mr. W. J. Larrimore of Mascott, Fla., who was with him when the end came. He stated that the rivers had overflown the potato patches Aid fish had been caught in the fence corners. He wanted to know if a man could bo prosecuted for fishing put of season, provided he could show that he had to catch the fish to keep them from rooting his potatoes out of the ground. The mails to this point all of last , week were very irregular, newspapers from Columbia and other points in this State were generally several days late. The Wilmington Star was i about the only daily newspaper that came through on time and it j was late a time or two. With the i . flood situation still unchanged in j this section, there is no telling when j conditions can be improved. * * * * J. H. Gerrald was in Conway or. business last week. * Conway had to do without mail for enly a day or two by reason of the storm. Mail from the north, by way of Wilmington, N. C., was not slopped at ail after the first day of the storm and the day following. But the trains on the main lines did not make regular schedules and the pa pers and other mails were a day late for nearly all of last week. ? * * ? * Miss Inez Bethea .was among the recent arrivals at Myrtle Beach to spend the vacation season. ***** | The storm damage in the tobacco i fields around Aynor was about like i the ravages of the storm in othei sections of the county. The stores on the east of Laurel Street, between llrd and 4th avenues of the town, now present a lively appearance, having been recently opened for business. Mrs. E. S. C. Baker left this week to visit friends and relatives in Florence and Darlington. The city of Florence was struck hard by the recent storm of wind and ain. The floods took many bridges nvay, and it was said that for more vhan a week it was impossible to drive i vehicle mare than five miles away' from *ho city, in any direction along the public roads. # ? # A. C. Thompson was away last week on business in the northern markets. The third instalment of Gloria's Romance appears in this issue of the paper. ATTENDANCE WAS GOOD CONSIDERING CONDITIONS - a T'.-;S The People Cooperating' With County Agent in Waking it a Success. | The Horry County Short Course given by the Home Demonstration Forces for the members of the Bread, Canning, and Poultry Clubs, and the women and girls of Horry was held July 19, iiO and 21. On account of the recent storm and heavy rains it was feared the attendance would not be so irood but many attended each day although the condition of roads and crops kept many away. The first meeting was held at Galivants Ferry July 19, the second on July 20 at Loris, vand the third on July 21 at -Spring Branch. At each of these places the people cooperated with the County Agent in making the day a success. The meeting at Galivants Ferry was well attended and enjoyed by all although the greater part of the regular program was not carried cut as the speakers were delayed in Marion on account of the high water:. The meeting was held in the beautiful pine grove on the river, everything had been gotten in rendu ess by Mr. F. G. Holliday. Farm Demonstration Agent M. W. Wall and Dr. Hedleigh, Tick Eradicator, were the speakers present. Demonstrations in the use of the Firelcss Cooker ami Jolly making were given by Miss. Derham, Home Demonstration Agent. A delicious picnic dinnerwas served by the ladies. After the demonstrations were finished water? ' melons were served by Dv. four o'clock a very interesting' am! profitable demonstration was given with the cream separator by F. G. Holliday, who gave a splendid talk on how he marketed his cream, etc. The meeting at Loris was well attended, especially by the girls and women. As the mayor could not be present Mr. J. A. Bryant had charge of the day; he was assisted by Rev. Shealey and others who helped to make the day a success. Ice water and lemonade were served during the day. A delicious dinner was served which was enjoyed by all. The fallowing programme was carried out, Mr. M. M. Stanley presiding: j Prayer, Rev. Mr. Shcaly. The last day of the course was held at Spring Branch, Friday July 21. Mr. M. .1. Bullock, Supt. of the Spring Branch School had everything in readi-ness The ladies met in the Domestic Science Room whore the following demonstrations were given: Making and using Fireless Cooker, Misses McLendon and Derham; Tomato Puree and Catsup, Miss Lechner; Pickle Making, Misses i,e. nnor and Mc London. The crowd then assembled in the spacious auditorium where Mr. M. J. Bullock in a few well chosen words welcomed the people to Spring Branch. He then gave the meeting over to Mr. M. W. Wall, who presided. Mr. Wall gave a short talk showing the need of better Homes in Horry as well as better Farms and Roads. Miss Derham, County Agent, then said a few words thanking the people for their ^q^per^ipn.'^^nd holp. Short talks Miss Bertha Lechner, Darlington County Agent, and Miss Annie Mae McLendon, Florence County Agent.
