ROCKEFELLER Unbalanced Man Instead Threw Rocks Through Vanderbilt Window. New York.?Carrying a leather bag with stones and rocks, Saerbes Fowrd bes, a wood carver of Yonkers, N. Y.J stopped in front of the home of William K. Vanderbilt on Fifth avenue and began to hurl stones through the j window. He was arrested. The police said Fowrdbes declared he believed he was throwing the stones at the home of John D. Rocke- ] feller, whom he held responsible for the suffering poor. At the request of Mr. Vanderbilt Fowrdbes wa., taken into the Vander bilt home where he talked incoherent- ( ly about ''revenging" himself on Mr. ( Rockefeller. I The police said Fowrdbes admitted that he and a friend had plotted to . kill "Mr. Rockefeller and that his as- . < sociate had promised to meet hini in front of the supposed Rockefeller j home. They expected, Fowrdbes said? ] that Mr. Rockefeller would come to , the door when the stones were thrown through the windows, whereupon the . <other man was to shoot him. The . alleged accomplice failed to appear t and Fowrdbes said he became impatier.t and decided to wreck the house, r L Some of the furniture in the Van- ^ "dorbilt home was damaged and a mir- i, ror was broken. ^ The man was charged with ma'i- ? , c\ cious mischief. r x At the police headquarters Fordbes p told a somewhat different story. I intend-1 ed to rush at him and shoot him." ! _ When told it was Mr. Vanderbilt's house he had attacked, Fowrdbes .grinned and said: "You police can't fool me; I know it's Mr. Rockefeller's house." The man was examined by a police headquarters' physician who afterwards announced that Fowrdbes was i a "dangerous man" and that he j would recommend his commitment to Bellevue hospital for observation as j to his sanity. A small siletto was found in j Fowrdbes' pocket. , H o I ' PEACE DEMAND IN VIENNA Demonstration Said to Have Been Made Before Emperor's Palace. : London.?An Amsterdam dispatch to the Exchange Telegraph says that1 peace demonstrators, most of whom -were women, marched from Vienna Monday evening to Schoenbrun castle, the residence of the Emperor,! amd demanded a separate peace with j Ttussia. j? 1785 COLLEGE OF C SOUTH CAROLINA'S 132d Year begins Entrance examinations at all the coun a. m. A Say Battleship Koenig Sent Su\ rg ja ofy \ [ perdreadnaughitoBw- <? ,.. " , _ " torn of Sea 1 FIGHTING LASTED SEVENTEEN HOURS l Sailors Deny That German Fleet Fled From t.hp Battle. i \ \ Berlin.?The assertion that the dreadnaught Warspite wa3 surk in the North sea battle last week again is made, notwithstanding British denials, in dispatches from Kiel to the Overseas News Agency. "These dispatches state that the Warspite was sunk during the day battle by the German battleship Koenig," the news agency says. "It was observed from the Koenig that the Warspite had been damaged badly. Then there came a great explosion and the Warspite sank rapidly. "Survivors from the German cruiser Klbing say that German submarines played an important part in the battle. The sea was thrown into commotion by falling shells. Every where bodies were floating. "Sailors state that the report that the German ships fled is ridiculous. In the German fleet were several vessels which were slower than the British and on that account it would have been impossible for the German fleet to escape if the result of the battle has been such as to place the British in position to pursue the Germans. "The soldiers report that there was uninterrupted fighting for 17 hours. They had no food in hat time except that bread was passed around once. The sailors are in good condition and do not look like men who have passed through the greatest naval battle ever fought." o ? STREET PREACHING IN NEW YORK. The tent work and open air preaching of the New York City Evangelistic Committee have come to be very effective. I^ast season 2,477 meetings were conducted in 118 centers and in eight languages. A vast multitude of people were reached with the Gospel message, many of whom would doubtless have never heard it otherwise. NOTICE. All persons holding claims against the estate of J. C.
