Onions are harvested soon after the
neck begins to stirivol and the top
bends over and commences to turn
yellow. The onni wny/ are then pulled
up by hand, the top*- wrung off in itio)

ferred to flat crates three feet \vi?:b. '
.and four fet long, the.sides being i'oijvj
inches high and the enrls five inches
high. The bottom wf the crate isj
made of latticet leaving one-half inch!
between the strips for am air space.
These crates are stacked one on topj
1 of another;- in a shed whore the onion?
[ are allowed to remain .until danger of
i freezing weather; they are then plac^
ed in storage or sold.

The old method of curing onions
f was to gather them by hand as soon
as they '-were mature, throwing thro
i or lour rows together and allowing
them to dry partially for a few days.
The tops were then removed and the
r onions plaoed on t'Aie flat crates de!

The best varieties vof onions to ^rov;
{ in the South for commercial purposes
are White Pearl and Prize Take'

' Bermuda onions may be grown in
some sections of the South profitably.
I The Crystal Wax is probably the most
satisfactory of the Bermuda type.
The onion is one of the most important
of our truck crops. Many car.
loads are shipped into this state every
i year from southern and northern
points, yet onions can be grown to
} perfection in this state. They thrive
best on a very fertile, sandy, loam
soil. On clayey soil they will grow
* fairly well, but they are much more
difficult to cultivate than on a sandy
loam and the yield is never as great.
In selecting land for onions, care i
should be taken not to select a field i
j previously grown in grain, as the <
grain will volunteer and cause con- i
| siderable trouble, coming up at about i
y the same time that the fell onion ;

HOG GRAZING CROPS
Information Concerning Several
Crips Valuable for Grazing
of Hogs.

as a farmer has his cotton and . corn
well under way, he should get about
planting grazing crops for his hogs.
Most of these crops are admirably
adapted for planting just the time
when the average farmer has a little
brecatfoing spell after getting his corn
and cotton stands, and this is the
time to put in the grazing crops
which are to feed the hogs and makei
moat for the farm or money for the
farmer.
The. following are a few of the
crops that make excellent hog graz-j
ing crops:

COW PEAS FOR POULTRY.

keep poultry for profit should make
m rangemcnts to plant several acres
of cow peas this spring. Several experiments
in feeding cowpeas to loying
hens, fattening turkeys, pigeons, 1
and even ciacked for baby chicks and
developing youngsters,, go to prove
that there is no grain of greater value
to the poultry or pigeon producer. 1
Cow peas contain 21 per cetn pro- 1
tein, the food from which the whites
of the eggs are made by the laying
hen, or about two-thirds as much of
this valuable constituent as cotton- 1
seed meal. It is necessary to grind
the peas for poultry food; simply add 1

A simple egg-making mixture to be
fed twice daily in litter to make the
j hens scratch to find the kernels is 100
pounds cow peas; 100 pounds cracked
corn, find 100 pounds whole oats or
j sorghum seed. This has been fed
| with success. Another way to use the
cow peas is to add one quart of cow
i \yovs to every two parts of the grain
! mixiure you are feeding.

range where they can obtain bugs and

From 12 tol8 eggs are laid at a clutch
and one service fertilizes all. Gather
these eggs as fast as laid and rep'acc
them with a couple of china or hard-1
boiled hens' eggs. Keep the eggs in |
a cool place not to exceed ten day:
before setting them under a common
hen.
Select a fat, broody hen as she
must sit from 28 to :u> days before
the. eggs hatch. Grease her as recom|

lice. .Make earth nests. Immerse
the eggs in water warm to the hand
(100 degrees) for two minutes on the
18th and 25th days. Remove the
poults from the nest to a warm basket
as soon as they become dry urn 1
strong, so that the hen will remain on
the nest until the hatching is completed.
Feed and water the hen and
let her move about for a short time.
Then take mother and poults to <

milk or cottage cheese. Soak light
bread in sour milk and squeeze dry.

In the spring of the year, when land
is being prepared for planting, there

that the drainage system which they

peeled. Perhaps the soil is just as wet
as it was before installing drainage,
but is this a valid reason for condemning
drainage V To answer this question
correctly, other questions must
first be answered. Were the drainage
improvements in the first place properly
designed and constructed? If the
answer to his question is affirmative,
may not some defective condition have
developed in the system since construction?
Have the ditches been kept
open and clean or have they v n p ?'mittcd
to cave in and deteriorate generally?
Have the outlets to the tile
drains been alowed to close during
the winter? Have tlie inlets and'

invested in such improve merits can be

To obtain the greatest degree of efficiency
in drainage improvements, as
in any other work, frequent inspection
J is necessary, brush and weeds should
be cut from the banks of the open
I ditches and the latter cleaned out to
1 the proper depth. Openings should be
i made into the ditches where necessary
to permit the surface water in the
fields to flow off rapidly.
In tile systems, if the outlet has not
been protected by a headwall, one
should ho constructed, for unprotected
outlets are often damaged by stock
and the action of surface water. lr

or swale, sti ps should be taken to see
that sufficient" fall exists in the ditch
to remove the water as fast as it is
discharged from the tile; otherwise
the water will back up into the tile
and the efliciency of the drain will be

To realize the maximum results
from any drainage system it is therefere
essential that inspection be frequent
and that necessary repairs be
made promptly.
Cut Them Into Shape.

along the cause of preparedness by increasing
the number of enlistments in
the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps,
surgeons at the Jefferson hospital,

remove, through minor operations,
and without charge for their services,
lisqualifying defects in applicants
that can be remedied by the use of the
knife.
Many men are rejected at the recruiting
station who might be saved to
the service through a simple surgical
operation, the Jefferson doctors have
found.
Last week they removed enlarged

from another rejected applicant of the
United States Marine Corps, and both
these men will be enlisted when the
wounds heal.
