Sir John Maxwell, the military commander,

rebels in this city have surrendered.

my gratitude to the Irish regiments
which have so largely helped to
crush the rising."
He is unable to refer in the present

sistant attorney general, ftas received
a telegram from Washington stating
that the United States circuit court of ?
appeals had decided in favor- of the
State af South Carolina in the case of
j the city of Augusta, Ga., against the
j treasurer of Edgefield county.
' This is a suit brought to recover
I taxes paid under protest* the property
involved being the dam over the Savannah
river which extends from theGeorgia
side of the river to Edgefield
county. The contention was that this
property should be exempt from taxation
in South Carolina as it is a dam
owned by a municipal corporation in
the State of Georgia.
Judge Joseph T. Johnson, of the
United States dictrict court, last year ,
decided against the plaintiff and the
circui court of appeals has' affirmed
the decision of the lower court.
