At his home near Adrian on Febthe
28, 1910, Mack Cooper, son of Mr.
~>ill and Eliza Cooner. iti the 20th
. year of his age. lie was confined to
his? bed for throe months and at times
suffered intensely, but he bore his
sufferings with patience. All was
^K>ne for him that loving hands and
physicians could do, but to no avail,
for God knew best and took him
away.
Mack was one of the most industrious,
peaceable and quiet young
men in this community, a faithful
member of the Sunday School and
ringing class at Makers Chapel. He
Ftas kind and affectionate to his parents
and associates, and was loved
fc. by all who knew him. As a Sunday
fekg School we feel like saying a mournmg
Class, a vacant seat tell us that
W one we love to meet, will join our
youthful throng no more till all those
'i changing scenes are o'er, n:> more
that voice we love to hear shall fill
its teacher's listening ear, no iporc
i-i 1 hut voice will join to swell the songs
* that of a Savior tell.
He was laid to rest in the Baker
Cemetery in the midst of sorrowing
relatives and friends, the Sunday
School desires to offer the following:

young friend we have lost one of our

son, the community one of the
most promising young men. and that
wc extend to his parents and relatives
our sympathy, and that a copy of
this notice he sent to the Horry Herald

PEOPLE OF STATE
AREFOR THE LAW
That the sentiment of the people of
the state has undergone a grea\
change in favor of the enforcement of
law, is clearly shown by an examination
of the reports of the solicitors,
as contained in the report of the attorney
general to the general assembly.
During 1916 2,591 cases were reported.
Of this number there was a
total of 1,031 convictions, or 63 per
cent. During 1915 a total of 3,210
cares were reported, with 2,121 convictions,
or 66 per cent. The increase
in cases brought to trial in 1915 over
1914 is 619, or 24 per cent. This increase
in the number of cases brought
to trial is accounted for by reason of.
the fact that the peace officers of the
state have been encouraged in their
work for the enforcement of law, be|
cause of the fact that they were back-1
ed up in their work by public sentiment,
which sentiment was exprse.sed
I i i the election of Governor Manning,
who, during his campaign, expressed
the determination to enforce all lav,s.
The governor has made it clear lo
the officers that he will back them up,
in the performance of their duties in
enforcing the laws.
That the governor has made good
in promise to enforce the law, is
clearly shown in the reports from the
solicitors. The increase in the number
of cases brought to trial, and tine
convictions had, does not indicate
more violations of law, but rather
that the violators are certain of punishment
under the present administration.

Harrington, and is loved for her
charming and pleasing personality.
Mr. McNeill is a substantial young
business man of Conway where he
has lived practically all of his life.?

VValty of Switzerland, who is here on
official business, and who is an officer
in the Swiss army, tells of the manner
in \vhL*h his country is maintaining
neutrality, as follows:
"Switzerland is maintains strict
iic ntrality ami in enforcing this has
not hesitated to oppose any belligerent
Nation attempting to invade a
foot of Switzerland territory or an
aeroplane flying over our country.
"Not long ago an Italian aerop'ane
was fired upon while over Switzerland,
and was brought down with its
pilot unhurt. The aeroplane and its
aviator are now interned. There have
keen a few occasions when Swiss soldiers
have had to make a demonstration
against belligerent troops, but
there has been no deliberate attempt
on the part of Germans and French
to violate our neutrality.
"While the majority of the Swis;
army is attending to industrial and
agricultural puvsuits. its entire force
could be mobilized in less than 48
hours. One-sixth of the army is constantly
on guard along the frontier.Qjve-third
of our army is under orders
all the time for immediate service if
required.
"Were it not for renorts in thr> mi

one would not know that Switzerland
is surrounded hy Nations that

Walty. "Business has not been
seriously affected hut the Government
had the precaution to monopolize
the grain crops to prevent private
monopoly, or, as you say in this country
a cornering of the market. The
Government sells the grain to the
bakers, and supervises the baking of
bread. Under this system we have a
direrent quality of bread, but more
nourishing than the bread baked In
| ordinary times. It has a different
color, somewhat gray in appearance
but it has more of the wheat in it.
Food prices have not advanced, and
there is an abundance. Only recently
I spent some time in Gsataad, a noted
resort in southern Switzerland, and
the total cost for myself and family,
five persons was $4.50 a day."

here today from Algiers.
The first message was received
February IT, and was partly in cade.
It read:

Course West."
The Com muni paw was some milt a
south of Azores when the message
was received. At noon a second message
apparently from the same ship
said:
"Altered course to Wpn and Nna."
The third and most significant ir.ee.
sage was received about 8 o'clock thu
evening. It's text was: "Germani
steamer is attacking shipping in the
Atlantic and may be assisted by captured
vessels which she armed. Inscription
6,000 tons, speed l~> knots,
combination freight and passenger
steamer . Carries two guns and u*
posing as neutral."
Last December it was reported that
the Communipaw had been attacked
and sunk by a submarine in the MeUI
itteranean. After Washington hud
tried in vain to ascertain her whereabout
she put into Algiers and her
captain denied any attuck hud been,
made.
