THURSDAY, FEB. 17, 1916
Wo have ceased to worry about old
Mexico.
o
The advancement of the human
race depends upon itself.
The month of January was remarkably
warm for Winter.
Mexico will in time belong to the
United States.
o
Why worry over hard times, when
we know and realize that it is much
worse in Europe.
0
Let the war wag on. Maybe it will
find an end some time before the eno
of time.
o
The enforcement of tlie prohibition
law lies in the hands of each individual.
o
A man who loves his State will do
hi." part toward ihe enforcement of
its laws and will take pride in it.
o
Innocent forms of amusement arc
reeded in a town or city to keep the
idle out of worse mischief.
o
It is not always that things come to
thosa who wait; but it may be to
those who act.
?o
This country now has unlimited
credit. It would be well to prepare
for defending the honor of too nation.
o
An examination of the income tax
returns in this country would no
doubt reveal a vast amount of untold
wealth.
<?
Thing are not alway what they
seem. The life of the * commcdian
would appear to he all lautrhs when it
is really no joke at all to him.
o
Even men who work sometimes
claim they do not get enough exertnse.
This is a fad like so many other
things in this world.
While there is life there is hope,
for remember that the last chance
will always be taken, though it might
have been refused earlier.
?o
Farmers Will be compelled to learn
something this year about making
fertilizers at home. What there is to
be sold is very high in price and at
the same time short of the ingredients
generally placed in them.
WOULD HAVE COMMITTEE
PROBE "LOBBYING"
A resolution was introduced in the
house of representatives authorizing
the committee on agriculture to call
witnesses and investigate the so-called
"lobbists" and who they are paid
by. The resolution specifically wants
a probe made into the members ol
the press for the purpose of ascertaii
ing if any of them are "lobbiests'
and to find if, individually or collect
ively, they are directors or ofiicers ii
any corporation interested in the
passage of any measure before th
house.
The resolution was introduced by
It. I). White, of Clarendon, and went
over for future consideration.
The resolution has created a deal
of interest in legislative and newspaper
circles.

to Dead Charleston
Member
Columbia, Feb. 14.?The House
took up for consideration the Cothran-Liles
resolution to adjourn sine
die this coming Saturday. It provoked
much discussion in short speeches,
some favoring but the majority opposing
the resolution which was killed
on a yea and nay vote of 4(J to 27.
It was argued that there are many
matters of importance still to be taken
up and that the General Assembly
has so far done very little. Messrs
Moore and l.ilcs favored the resolution.
Mr. Odum suggested that
many interests wanted early adjournment.
Messrs. Wingard, Jackson and
H. H. Harris spoke against the resolution,
maintaining that the Genera'
Assembly should stay at work
Messrs. Mower and Johnstone favored
the postponement of consideration
of the resolution.
The House has adopted a resolution
by Mr. Brigham providing a memorial
service Wednesday niuht at 9:H0
o'clock in honor of the late Moultrie
J. Clement, of Charleston county.
