TO SEND BAT ARMY
* AFTER MOSQUiTOES
San Antonio's Bat Roost to Bo
Opened for Business
Next Month.
San Antonio, Texas.?An army of
rncaquito-eatingc bats, several thousand
strong, will be turned loose >n
I San Antonio next month. K, as has
been predicted for it, the army succeeds
in crippling seriously the activities
of the j^erm-laden mosquito population,
many other cities may follow
vSan Antonio's example and establish
* their municipal bat roosts.
1 Dr. C. A. R. Campbell, who has
made a special study of bats, is responsible
for San Antonio's bat roost.
The institution came into existence
last spring. It was not a success in
its first year owing to the fact that it
was established late in the spring and
its population was not numerous
^ enough. This spring there is a large
army of bats on hand and it is expected
to get an early start.
Dr. Compbcll says that one bat In
the course of a single day will eat
one thousand mosquitoes. He expects
to hordes of mosquitoes to perish daily.
4 and that by the end of the summci
> V the pestiferous insects will bo almost
' Jf if not entirely, missing from this lot
cality.
T1in flight of the bats will begir
about February 15 and from then until
April SO they will fly about ah
night long, trailing and devouring
mosquitoes. Dr. Campbell says thai
the more malaria, typhoid and othei
germs a mosquito carries, the bettei
, the bat relishes it.
After April .SO the bats grow Iosj
hungry and more sleepy. Hy thp en<
of July their flight totals only abou
two hours. Soon thereafter the seasoi
for baby bats arrives.
A neighboring city having writter
to lJr. Campbell asking him how to ge
rid of mosquitoes, he replied: "Breef
bats." Then he got another letter in
* quiring " But when you've got rid o
the mosquitoes how do you get rid o
"the bats?"

leading into Starkville. The negroes
were being held in the Worth county
jail in connection with the killing of
Sheriff Mpreland, of Lee county, who
met deatli at the hands of negroes in
Worth county during the Christmas
holidays. Starkville is a hamlet three
mijes from Leesburg, the county seat
of Lee county.
Cutting all wires leading north from
Sylvester was included in the plans of
the party. For that reason the fate
of the negroes was not definitely
known until today, hours after they
had been lynched. They were quickly
taken from the jail, loaded into automobiles
and started north, hut noth}
ing more than that was known for
some time. The bodies, perforated
with bullet holes, were cold when
I
found this morning*.
Seized Sheriff.
I At about 10 o'clock last night Sher1
iff 1?. A. Potts at Slyvcstcr was awak
! od that they hail captured a negro
encd by four or five men who announc
and wanted to place him in jail. They
v c re admitted bearing* a negro at nnd
with ropes. Suspecl'ng nothing ne
'elhcers watched the men as they.
I falmly loosened the bounds. Suddenly
the situation changed, however, as
the visitors seized the officer and demanded
the k \vs to the cells. They
were soon forthcoming. At that moI
mcnt several automobiles were driven
up in front of the jail. The men in
them hurriedly entered, joined the
men who had preceded them and all
who did not watch the olVicer helped
get the negroes.
They were rushed out of the jail,
I bundled into the machines and all
j started north at a rapid pace. The
! officer immediately attempted to reI

; had been cut.
The bodies were found by Lee county
citizens who were out on the roads
early today apparenty under the im'
pression that there was reason to be;
liove that if any of the negroes were
taken from the jail they would be taken
to Lee county where Sheriff
Moroland was popular. Going out
from Starkville a short distance they
encountered the ghastly scene of tho
five men hanging to one limb within
full view from the road. Apparently
they had been strung up and then bocame
targets for the men who had
taken them from jail.
Four of the victims were of one
family?Felix Lake and his three sons
Frank. Pewey, and Major. The fifth
was Rodins Seamore.
One Prisoner Saved.
It was believed, however, that James
Keith, a negro, was the prisoner
most wanted by the lynchers. It was
said that there was more evidence
against him than any of the others.
Sheriff Potts, however, had taken
the precaution to remove him several
days ago to some other jail, the location
of which he has not divulged .
Moreland was killed at the home of
Kelix Lake when he went there to arrest
a negro. It was reported that
more than one cf those in the house
shot him and all were arrested later.
