A cry, which was almost a howl of anger, broke from Quest's lips. Craig had fallen sideways from his chair. There was an ominous change in his face. Something seemed to have passed from the atmosphere of the room, some tense and nameless quality. Quest moved forward and laid his hand on Craig's heart. The girl was on her knees, screaming. "Take her away," Quest whispered to Lenora "What about him?" French demanded, as Lenora led the girl from the room. ^ "He fought too hard," Quest said, gravely. "He is dead. Professor?" They all looked around. The spot where he had been standing was empty. The professor hnd rrnna (TO BIO CONTINUED.) BALKAN CAMPAIGN SLOWLY DEVELOPS Anglo-French May Face the Whole Bulgarian 4- Army. \ London, Dec. 3.?The second phase of the Balkan campaign is developing ?U.nK. Ti ... oiuwiy, 11 is expected, nowever, that with the conclusion of the operations against Serbia and the occupation of i Monastic, the whole Bulgarian army, when the weather permits, will attempt to drive the British and French forces out of southern Serbia, while the Austrians continue their efforts to over run Montenegro; and the Germans, with the aid of the Turks, and what Bulgarians and Austrians can be spared, turn their attention to the , # Russians, who again are reported to ^ have entered Rumanian territory on ;* their way to Bulgaria. A report from France that part of the German army is going to the Gallipoli peinsula to assist the Turks in a great effort to drive the Entente Allie^ from the peninsula is hardly credited in military circles hero where ^ it is not believed that they can spare the men, guns and ammunition for such a venture. The Turks it is true, have been displaying more activity re cently in the Dardanelles but this they are believed to have been doing more with ammunition which they have been collecting during the quiet period than with any fresh supplies .from Germany. Rustchuk on the Danube, west of the Rumanian border, in the opinion of well advised persons here, is to be the point of concentration for the Germans, both as a warning to Rumania that it. would be dangerous for her to join the Entente Allies and to meet any Russian advance. There is conflict in the speculation fcr here regarding the position of Greece. Some dispatches say a satisfactory agreement has been reached between the Entente Allies and the Hellenic Kingdom, while others ayer that the situation is so unsatisfactory that the Entente Allies have re-established their restrictions on Grgok commerce. Wilmington, Del.?Although a searching investigation into the cause of the disaster was started by officials of the DuPont Powder Company, immediately after the explosion which caused the death of 31 workmen and the serious injury of six other in the company's upper Hagley yards last \lTOnlr iw\f K i n n? /\ f o f n nrri l\l/\ tn va ?? v^v i\t iiv/iiun^ \j i (i tau^iuiv luivuii had been discovered. Every employee who was near the building was examined thoroughly. Not one of the 2(> men who were in the pellet packing house escaped and there is only a big hole in the ground where the building stood The investigators admit that there is only little possibility of the responsibility ever being placed, and company officials stated that they were without a thread on which to hang their hopes that its origin will ever be ascertained. Carles B. Landis, an official of the j DuPont Company, gave out a statement in which he said every precaul caution had been taken to protect the plants, and that these precautions had been redoubled with the receipt of war orders. "Our policy system," he added, "is under the direction of Major W. J. Sylvester, former chief of police of the company's secret service. "The whole thing is an absolute mystery. Not a man is living who was in or even near the packing house when the accident occurred and we seem to he without the means of ever starting an investigation." Warning To Teuons. Reports that notices had been found nailed to trees and fences leading to the plants warning the employees of Teutonic origin that they would imperil their lives by continuing their work were receiving the attention of the big forces of detectives working on the case. These reports were discredited by the investigators and officials of the company alike, but it was. decided to run down every possible clue. After the reports had gained considerable circulation several days ago the company made a thorough investigation, but declared they had found absolutely nothing to substantiate them. Men accustomed to travel the roads in the vicinity of the plants were said to have seen the notices upon several occasions, but stated they had remained iu position for only a few hours at a time. The notices, according to one of these men, read as follows: "Americans who lost their lives with the sinking of the Lusitania did so after due warning. All men of Teutonic origin are hereby warned that they, if they continue in the employment of the DuPont Powder Company, they will do so at their peril and will be taking their lives in their hands." o AMMUNITION PLANT HAS BEEN DESTROYED Discontented Workmen in Herman Factories Said to be Suspected.
