CANT MAKE PEACE
NOW SAYS BRIAND
French Premier Says Subject

* AMERICA BROUGHT

Paris.?Aristidc Briand, chief of l!i
new war ministry of France, receiver
the American newspaper correspond
onts in a body last week, inviting then
to ask questions or make requests re
i lative to their work.
Asked regarding peace suggestions
LJT re said:
"What are those peace suggestions
They are heard first in one countr
* and then another, impersonal and im '
ponderable. They irritate at the pies ^
ent stage of the war. I do not wis',
to consider them even to the extent
f 1
of a public denial and rejection. We
can think of nothing but to drive for;
ward to complete success by arms." ,
Speaking with much feeling the premier
added:
"Even t0| mention a peace by compromise
or concession is to be untrue
.... 4
to those who are giving their lives at
the front." ^
At another time when America was
mentioned M. Briand declared "the
1 war has brought Americans much clos
er to us even than they were before, j
Frenchmen appreciate deeply the sympathy
and good will in your country.
That perhaps is because every feeling ,
is more intense now than in time of
peace." t
The premier considered successively
the censorship which he said he woul *
reduces to a minimum, arrangements
* for distributing more promptly ofli- "
vial statements respecting operation:
and greater opportunities for eye wit
ness reports. In all these question:
he took a greater interest because of
his personal experience in newspape
work.

" You must remember," he pointed
out, "that the Mongars hate these fellows.
It was part of my arrangement
with Hassan that they should leave us
when we got in sight of the Mongar
4 encampment. It may have been meant
for Hassan. The Mongars hate the

direction at all."
They talked a little while longer and
finally stole away to their tents to
sleep. Outside, the camel drivers
j talked still, chattering away, walking
mowvand then around Hassan's body in
isolemn procession. Finally, one of
4 .them who seemed to have taken the
t lead, broke into an impassioned stream
-of words. Soon they stole away?a
long, ghostly procession?into the
night.
'Those fv lows seem to have left off
their infernal chattering all of a sudden,"
Quest remarked, lazily, from inside
the tent.
The p.ofessor made no answer. He
4 was asleep.

AMERICAN SHIP
SEARCHED IN PORT
British Landing Party Search
Zealandia at Progreso,
Mexico
MAY SEIZE VESSEL
AND TAKE CONSEQUENCES
Zealandia Has Lecn Behaving
Peculiarly and May Have
1 T

Washington.?Groat Britain has
been formally asked by the United
States for information concerning the
recent search of the American ship
Zealandia in the Mexican port of Progreso
by a landing party from a British
cruiser. Ambassador Page was.
instructed to make the inquiry
through the London Foreign Oflice.
A report from American Consul
John W. Germon at Progreso stated
that the Zealandia was forciably
searched last week by men from a
British cruiser now lying outside the
harbor, presumably waiting to seize
the vessel.
In the absence of complete data
State department officials were not
inclined to comment on the case but
it was indicated that it might develop
new points in the neutrality
situation prompting Mexico as well as
the United States to enter protest to
Great Britain.
The Zealandia figured much of late
in reports of the investigations of
Britsh nconfre utliA ---
?0??..v? on me trail
of ships supposed to be fitting out in
the United States for attacking oil
carrying ships from Mexican fields
where the British Navy draws a great
proportion of its supply of fuel oil.
The Zealandia has no change of
registry involved as has been the case
of many other American ships since
the beginning of the war, but originally
was a Hawaiian ship which
came under the American flag at the
time of the annexation.
On October 7 the Zealandia mysteriously
left Pensacola, Fla., at
night, clearing for Tampico, Mexico,
carying a large stock of provisions
and manned principally by a crew of
Germans. An American flag painted
on her hull had been painted over and
it was reported that .while at sea she
flew the German colors, although that
tvas flatly denied by her owners.
The ship moved from Tampico to
?ampeche where British agents reported
she bore a large quantity of
osin for which there was no ostensible
use in Mexico although it is used
argely for making shrapnel . They
dso reported their suspicions that she
>ore a large quantity of copper and
he British view was that the ship
vas waiting for an opportunity to slip
?ut with the cargo for some port
chore it would find it sway to Great
Britain's enemies.
Nothing further of her movements
;as reported until lately. The forcible
earching of an American ship in a
eutral port probably would constiutc
one of the most, serious issues to
rise between the United States and
Ireat Britain in the controversy now
i the channels of diplomacy over the
Sritish Navy's conduct toward Amrican
shipping. While awaiting furler
details officials were silent. A
lorough investigation will bo made.
In the event that it should develop
uit the Mexican port authorities had
o means of resisting the entry of the
ritish seamen, the good oflices of
ie United States to prevent a recurmce
of such incidents might be enStOfl
bv \!i<vii'<>
It was suggested here that if the
ealandia was armed for raiding
arposes her sojourn beyond the 24uir
limit in a neutral port, especialvvhere
the authorities were powerss
to intern her, might be advanced
* a justification for entering the tectorial
waters to seize the vessel,
ere suspicion that a merchant ship
armed, however, is not regarded by
llcials here as sufficient ground for
ich action.
