CAPTURE THE FAIR
Floral Parade and Night Dance
Close Harvest Jubilee?"Big*
Wednesday Crowd."
(The State.)
Miss (Columbia was a jubilant and j
happy sou! last night, though perhaps
a trive wearied. For one week
she has been hostess to all of her
South Carolina brothers and sisters
and unofficial estimates place the total
number of visitors at about 100,000.
It has been the- greatest merrymaking
week in the history of the capital and
already plans are being formulated
for a greater event next year.
The fair and harvest jubilee has
been a success from every standpoint.
The order was good, there being few
arrests by the police. The weather
was ideal. There was a general air
of prosperity over the festival. There
has been a spirit of cooperation unknown
before in Columbia in such
measure.
Yesterday, the last day of the fair,
was officially designated as ladies' day
and it was estimated that more than
10,000 persons visited the grounds.
The beautiful floral parade on Main
street yesterday afternoon attracted
many thousands of spectators.

stream of visitors through tho buildings
and those connected with thcj
booths said that it looked like "Wednesday
crowd of previous years.
All trains entering Columbia.
brought large numbers of visitors and'
again there was a large contingent
of automobiles present.
The 900 Winthrop college girls arrived
yesterday morning by special
train and took the fair frounds by
storm. Governor Manning was present
to welcome the young women at a
public reception in the woman's building
at 10 o'clock. The governor remained
at the grounds throughout the
day studying the exhibits. <
Street cars bound for the fair
grounds were crowded. All automo- :
bile transfers were in operation and
many walked to the grounds yesterday.
1 There have been five great days of
the fair this year. Monday there was
a good attendance and, in fact, every
day there has been a banner day when
compared to corresponding previous
fairs.
Officials of the fair continued to talk
yesterday about "Big Thoursday." It
was unofficially stated that the street
railway company hauled more than
50,000 persons during the day. All
merchants reported an excellent business.
The places of amusement were
filled Yo capacity and there was a
on the Midway at the fair
grounds.
Many factors have contributed to
the unusual success of the fair this
year. First of all the success was
due to the cooperation of all forces.
Congratulations might well he extended
to the following: The Columbia
Chamber of Commerce, the merchants
of Columbia, city council, the
State fair society, the various counties
participating, the State depart
ment of agriculture, Clemson college,
Winthrop college, the United States
farm demonstration forces, the home
economics agents, the exhibitors at
the fair, the coast artillery, * be National
Guard, the hargest jubilto committee
and the people of South Carolina.
