United States should prepare for "a
commercial invasion" as well as for a
military invasion was voiced by Charles
Warren Fairbanks, former vicepresident,
in an address delivered at a
political meeting here. "The present
prosperity of certain industries based
on war orders is inherently temporary,"
he said. "Within the period of
the next administration, our own national
life and the markets of the
world will be profoundly affected by
the great conflict raging abroad. We
must meet that with a constructive
pro-American programme which consists
of:
"1. The restoration of the protective
tariff. 2. Adequate preparedness
for national defense. 3 The restoration
of the American flag to the
oceans. 4. Organization to market our
wares in the world markets
