of Women
Washington.?Pres. Wilson will
vote for the woman suffrage State
constitutional amendment in New
Jersey, at the special election October
19. He said he would vote, not as the
leader of the Democratic party, but as
a private citizen.
Mr. Wilson said he believed the
question should not be made a party
NjP issue and should he decided by the
states.
The following statement was given
* out at J.he White House:
"I intend to vote for woman suflf|
rage in New Jersey because I believe
that the time has come to extend that
privilege and responsibility to the women
of the State; but I shall vote, not
as the leader of my party in the na*
tion, but only upon my private conviction
as a citizen of New Jersey, call
ed upon by the legislature of the
State to express his conviction at the
polls. I think that New Jersey will be
greatly benefitted by the change.
"My position with regard to the
way in which the great question
^ should be handled is well known. I
believe that it should be settled by the
States and not by the national government,
and that in no circumstances
should it be made a party question;
and my view has grown stronger at
every turn of the agitation."
Secretaries Garrison, McAdoo, Redfield
and Wilson, who will also vote!
on the question in the near future!
I
jt have declared in favor of equal suffrage.

French turned swiftly toward the
professor.
"You hear what this man says?"
he exclaimed. Mr. Ashleigh, you're
fooling me! You entered this house
with Sanford Quest. You will have
to tell us where he is hiding."
The professor knocked the ash from
his cigar and replaced it in his mouth.
His clasped hands rested in front
of him. There was a twinkle of something
like mirth in his eyes as he
glanced up at the inspector.
"Mr. French," he said, "Mr. Sanford
Quest is my friend. I am here in
charge of his house. Believing as I
do that his arrest was an egregious
'blunder, I shall say or do nothing likely
to afford you any Information."
French turned Impatiently away.
Suddenly a light broke in upon him;
Ihe rushed toward the doon
"That d?d Dutchie!" he exclaimed.
I The professor smiled benignly.

Engineer Compelled to Run

Two masked men early Friday held
up and robbed a Baltimore and Ohio
express train from New York to St.
Louis, two miles west of Central, W.
Ya. Their booty was taken from mail
cars, according to reports received,
and was believed to be large.
Grant Helms, the engineer, was attracted
by a noise from the tender.
Looking over his shoulder he saw two
masked men climbing over the coal
carrying shotguns. One of the men ordered
Helms to cut off the engine and
mail car. After he ran the locomotive
two miles westward tinder the cover
of guns, Helms and the fireman were
compelled to alight. The other man
then took the throttle and ran the engine
and car a mile or two farther
west. The robbers then went through
the mail car, looting the registered
mail.
More than two hours from the time
?ut .--j-M '
wi tut: i uuuury uniu news could be
sent to division headquarters at Parkersburg
and Grafton. Helms said he
could not give a good description of
the men. He said they were experienced
in the handling of a locomotive.
Railroad authorities believe the men
hurried over the hills to a road near
Central station where they had an au'
tomobile. *
j The train left New York. Usually
it carried important mail and express,
i The amount of booty secured is unknown.
The county officials were informed
that the robbers who held up the Baltimore
and Ohio train got about 100
registered packages and 90 packages
of unsigned bank notes being sent
from Washington to banks in the Middle
West. The value of the currency
was estimated at $500,000, ^
