NO BILL FOUND * ON ARSON CHARGE Eliza Davis Charged With House Burning Went Scott Free. V ? f ^The grand jury failed to find <mough evidence against Eliza Davis, the negro woman who was charged with burnir|? a tenant house belonging to L. P. Roberts last Spring. Her husband Jim Davis was convicted last Spring of violation of the dispensary law. That night the tenant house of L. P. Roberts occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Martin was discovered on fire in the middle of the night and tracks to and from the house in the direction of the home of Eliza Davis. She was arrested charged with the crime and remained in jail for a time, final I ly making bond. The evidence against her was limited and this perhaps accounts for the ^ finding of "No Bill" by the gram ||j^ a ^ # ^ ^ Dr. L. A. Woodruff, 0. P. T. WHITE MEN CUT f BYNEGRO MAN Recently there was a serious diffi- | culty near White Oak Church caused by an attack made on two white men by a negro with a very sharp knife or j raz0r. The two white men, Messrs. j Will Grainger and Ode Todd were on their way to White Oak church at night, and they were walking arm in arm, when they met two negroes ( along the road. One of the negroes undertook to separate the white men and walk between them, trying to pull ( the white men apart. The white men | resisted this and in the affray, the negro, who already had a weapon drawn split the cheek of one of the ^ white men, cut a gash in his neck, and cut the muscle of the arm in two on the other white man. The negroes , were chased for some distance, but they finally got entirely away and escaped. j o , J. W. Todd was here Saturday.
