Daniel was seriously injured at Sandy Island last Friday evening. While coupling up the log cars in the timber train of the Richardson Cypress Lumber & Shingle Co., he missed his footing in some way that has not been explained and the car wheel passed over a portion of body, mangling his leg and injuring him in other ways. He was brought to the Burroughs Hospital here on Friday night. An operation was performed and the leg was amputated. It was hoped that he would recover, but after lingering until 2 o'clock on Sunday after- ' noon, he passed away. Mr. i (ohnson arrived here about the same ' ;ime and stated that he had struck he negro with a buggy whip. Later reports show that the negro vas drunk at the time of the occurence and was about ready to fall over iny way. When ho was struck, which! ivas a light blow, he fell down and vas apparently unconscious as a result of whiskey. When the officer returned to the stables to take Johnson into custody he had left for home liere. When the negro recoveved from the effects of whiskey he was very much alive. Mrs. Albert K. Goldfinch lately returned from a visit to friends and relatives in the up-country. Mrs. (lore, of Longs, S. C., is visiting her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Nicholas. o ***** Mrs. A. M.
