In the southern United States hopes
are commonly infested with roundworm
or parasitic nematodes known
as kidney worms (Stephanurus dentutus).
These worms may reach a
} length of 2 1-4 inches, but generally
are not more than an inch and a half
long and about an eighth of an inch in
diameter. In color they are grayish
or yellowinu white, mottled or streaked
with black. They may be found in
the kidney or the surroumfing.fat, not
infrequently in the loin muscles and
neighboring constructive tissues, and
sometimes in various localities?body

varies .with the number of
worms, their location and the presence
or absence of associated germs. Particularly
serious damage may be caus?
ed when the kidneys,_the ducts leading
from the kidneys to the bladder, or the
liver are involved, and pluging of tho
portal veins by the parasites may resut
in fatal attack of colic. Symptoms
of kidney-worm disease are variable;
loss of appetite, emaciation,
swollen abdomen and lameness of the
hind quarters are not nmommon.
^ The life history of the kidney worm
so far as it has been worked out is as
follows: The adult worms produce!
eggs, which pass out of U . body of the
host in the urine. Apparently propa-!
gation is possible only in the case of,
those individuals which are so located
that ti e eggs may reach the kidneys,'
the passages from kidneys to bladder,'
or the bladder, (.'inside the body the,
'eggs hatch, ami the larvae thus set'
free, after undergoing a certain .

the skin or be swallowed v?5.il> food or
drink. As determined by experiment,
'*/n the former case the worms finally
locate in the kidney or in its neighborhood,
whereas if the larvae are swaD
lowed they become located in the liver.
Prevention Only Known Remedy.
No satisfactory medical treatment
is known for kidney worms, so that
the only way of combating the parasite
is through preventive measures.
A As far as possible hogs should be
kept in clean dry quarters. Damp
muddy pens and mud wallows should
be abandoned. Concrete floors will
aid in reducing the chances of infection
if frequently cleaned and kept
dry. In some parts of Asia hogs are
kept on slat floors, raised above the
ground, and thus escape serious infestation.
Rooting should he prevented by
ringing the nose. Hogs apparently
affected with kidney worms should be
isolated from the healthy ones. Hogs

I ?V The question is sometimes asked
M** -whether hogs affected with kidney
/ worms are fit for food. If the animal
is not so seriously infested as to rentier
it unfit on account of general poor
condition ,the meat is perfectly fit for
food, after the portions containing the
parasites and the surrounding tissues
have been trimmed out.

Have all fallen fruits picked up
promptly. They contain insects and
diseases that will give trouble next1

HOW TO HANDLE
DAMPENED WHEAT
Most of the Wheat Delivered
From the Farm This Year
is Damp. ?

Much of the new crop of wheat as!
delivered from the farm this year has
a high moisture content which, if put
into storage without special treatment
is very likely to cause troubel by becoming
musty and hot.
By mixing high-moisture and lowmoisture
wheat together, a methodwhereby
part of the damp wheat
of* this years' crop can be put
into good condition was demonstrated
in an experiment at Baltimore which
wag directed by a grain-standardization
specialist of the department in cooperation
with the Gambrill Manufacturing
Co., of that city.
The experiment described was performed
to determine if it would he
possibly or feasible to handle damp
wheat in such a way that it would not
he necessary to put it through a commercial
drier and yet insure its. keeping
safely in storage or during shipment.
For tuis experiment, one ear of Pn-i
eiflc coast white wheat containing!
1,098 bushels was mixed with one car;
of eastern red winter wheat c.ontining
1.120 bushels, and put into storage in
an elevator bin. On July 29, samples
taken from the white wheat while it
was still in th% car tested 9.7 per cent
moisture. Samples taken from the
red wheat on July '31, while his wheat i
was also still in the car ,tested 15.1 J
per cent. These wheats were thoroughly
mixed on August 8 and the
mixture was then put into storage in
an elevator bin and allowed to remain'

there until August 0, when it was
transferred to another bill. Samples,
taken from the wheat at the time it,
was transferred tested 12.9 per cent
moisture for the red wheat and 12.2

was 12.5 per cent and of the white
; wheat, 12 per cent. While the grain
wa# stil in the cars the red wheat tested
higher in moisture by 6.4 per cent
than the white wheat. By August 6,
or three days after the wheats wert
mixed, enough of the moisture from
i the damp wheat Uid been transferred
to the dry wheat so that the difference
in their moisture content at that time
was only seven-tenths of J per cent.
By August 10 or one week after the
i wheat had been mixed, the difference
in their moisture contents had been re-,
^ duced to only one-ha!f of 1 per cent, i
In order to have a record of the
temperature changes in the grain during
this experiment, four electrical
thermometers were placed at different
depths in the bin into which the mixture
was run. No appreciable change
in temperature was noticed during the
transfer of the moisture from the red
to the white wheal .
The mixing of damp and dry wheat
will facilitate the handling of the wet
wheat this year. The miller who buys
wet wheat and has some dry wheat to,
mix with it can obviate some of the;
extra work in handling the dampi
wheat to keep it in condition and also
get it in shape for milling by mixing
the two wheats together for a fewdays.
This will also do away with
part of the extra work in drying. One
car of wheat can be dried down to a
low moisture content and then mixed
with another car of wheat with hich
moisture content and time and labor
be saved. If the mills or elevators are
equipped so that they can mix and dry
at the same time, this method will
greatly increase their capacity for
taking # care of large quantities of
damp wheat .

good application of fertilizer. Forj

The constant drive for "thrift" is
having effect not only among older
people, but among school children, as
seen by the report of sixty-one savings
banks formed in as many Chicago
public schools last year. The report
shows that 13,638 children saved
$27,115.94, and of this amount $11200.90
has been transferred to regular
banks. Six pupils of the seventh
and eight grades conduct the banks.
Any sum from five cents up may be
deposited, and as soon as a pupil's account
amounts to $5 it is transferred
to a regular bank and an aecount with
the pupil is opdfced. It is reasonable
to suppose that rural schools will
adopt the teaching of thrift as a subsidiary
course. The money could be
deposited in the local banks in savings
departments to pay three or throe and
one-half per cent interest. When the
account amounts to $25, it could be
withdrawn and a $100 bond paying
four and a half or fifty per cent could
be bought. Many reputable bond
houses will sell a hundred dollar bond
on the instalment plan, paying the
full amount of the interest on the
amount deposited until the face value
of the bond is paid in full.

The pea aphis, a small green plant
louse, is rated among the important
injurious insects of the world, because
of the damage it does to the leguminous
crops, especially the red and
crimson clovers and vetches, in which
it winters and front which it spreads
to field and garden peas and sweet
peas. The pea aphis prefers the
young, tender clover leaves and stems,
but eventually covers the entire plant.
Garden and sweet peas rapidly &ucoumb;
clover, particularly red clover,
is able to withstand considerable injury,
but at times entire fields are de
stroycd. Not infrequently the plant
louse attacks alfalfa. In addition to
the weakening of the plant, the louse
deposits honeydew to such an extent
that the plants in a badly infested
field will he discolored on account of
being covered with this sweetish fluid.
The infested fields are not always killed
outright, but heavy infestations apparently
have a weakening effect, and
probably much of the winter killings
of clover can be traced back to th$
pea aphis. " -v.
Methods of Artificial Control.
The entomologists of the department,
who shortly will publish ti bulletin
on this subject, make the following
statement as to artificial control:
"In the clover field the pea aphis is
ordinarily held in check by its natural
enemies if it is apparent that this
aphis is becoming unduly abundant

thereafter as possible, since the cutting
and drying of the clover will kill
most of the insects. Clover which becomes
coated with the honeydew of
the aphides will not cure properly.
Spring pasturing or early cutting back
of the clover will check the multiplication
of this plant louse."
Fortunately, this species of plant
louse has a number of natural enemies
One of the most important of these is
a fungus which thrives under moist
conditions, and may appear after a
few days of rainy weather in the summer.
The fungus spreads with remarkable
rapidity among the lice and
frequently eradicates them. Pea
aphids when attacked by this fungus
first turn brownish and later become
covered with the fungus threads.
