A large number of letters have been
r received by the Weather Bureau ask,
/ ing for information about the value
r\| of lightning rods for farm buildings.
It has therefore seemed advisable to
reprint, for the information of the
public, the article entitled "Ten ques-!
tions and answers about lightning
^ rods" which appeared in the Weekly
News Letter of July 8, 1914:
(1) Do lightning rods really protect
buildings? Answer: Yes; but the
rods must be of proper character,
0 properly installed, and properly
grounded .in relatively moist earth.
Periodical inspection and maintenance
in good condition are indispensable to
efficient protection.

Answer: No; not in the least.
Sharp needle like points are effective
in dissipating small sustained electrical
charges, but such electrical mani-'
festations are perfectly harmless. The
imagined superiority of such fanciful
points is utterly valueless when the
rod is struck by a real lightning flash.; "

Because of its availability and j li
cheapness, as well as its electrical; a

Aluminum is a competitor for iron
md copper for lightning rods. Its
lurability under exposure to weather
s in its favor, but its fusibility makes
t inferior to iron for points.
If low first cost is the controlling
actor, galvanized-iron rods must be j

If higher first cost is not an obtacle,
the choice should go to copper

(6) Should lightning conductors be

Substantial iron points in combination
with copper cables from five-sixteenths
inch in diameter, for small
farm buildings, to one-half inch in diameter,
for large important structures,
form one of the best possible systems
of conductors for lightning-rod
construction.
There is no good reason for purchas
ing other fanciful forms of cable at
materially greater prices per pound
than are asked for standard makes of
cable approximately the same cross
section.
(7) Must lightning rods be connected
to the earth? Answer: Yes; by all
means, and most effectively. Just a
few operators in the lightning-rod
profession have sought to impose upon
the uninformed a system of ungrounded
lightning rods. Such rods
are a menace instead of a protection.

Details erf the administration's program
of national defen now being
formulated will not be given out until

That is made clear in a statement is-1
sued by Secretary Garrisson, in which
he urged that he be not pressed for
details until the new military policy
is ready to be laid before the public.
Fears that adverse criticism of
parts of the scheme might endanger it
as a whole is given as the reason by
Secretary Garrison. He said that he
had refrained from discussing the sub
ject because he felt that the effect
would be more likely to do harm than

Plans for the reorganization of the
army, now being worked out by the
general staff, will be laid before President
Wilson this week by tho Secretary.

"I have absolutely refrained from
making any statements," said Secretary
Garrison, "because I feel that the
effect thereof at this time would be
more hurtful than helpful. There

statements of what is in contemula

growers had a most enthusiastic meeting
here for the purpose of organizing
a local branch to become a part
of the State association to be formed
! at Trenton.

markets of the department of agriculture
of Washington ,and Fred W.
Hoffman, market agent of Clemson
college, the growers decided to enter
the State organization and select a
committee of five member to attend
\ the meeting at Trenton.
Temporary officers were selected as
follows: Dr. F. G. Asbill, chairman,
and M. B. Watson, secretary. The
following committee was chosen to

The purpose of the organisation Ts?
to perfect better cultural methods
adopt standard rules for grading and
packing and establishing a system of
inspection which will hold the grades
uniform and build up a market repu!
tation. Labels will be adopted to be
i attached to crates of the various
i grades so as to create a market demand
by advertising the products of
j tne state.
By uniting the asparagus shipments,
better transportation rates
and service can be secured, and market
conditions in the various consuming
centres will he received so that
shipments may be made most profitably.
Connections will be made with
the best selling agencies in the various
markets and by these means it is expected
that greater profits will be secured.
The prospects for this association
are exceedingly bright an every
grower of asparagus in this section
should become a member not only for
his own benefit, but for the upbuilding
of this important State industry.

organizations will be formed at the

Holding up German Advances
on Warsaw L.ast Week
Say Despatches
In relation to the German drive at
Warsaw the latest news toward the
end of the past week had the following
to say:
Although the Germans are using
strong reinforcements, they have not
yet beaten down the Russian resistance
either around Warsaw or in Kovn<>
and Courland provinces, in each of
which sectors heavy fighting has
raged for nearly a fortnight.
Except for the capture of the village
of Goworowo, in the Narew front
and a number of prisoners and machine
guns at that point and between
Mitau and the Niomen, the Germans
do not claim any advance . In fact,
, Gen. von Buelow. in the north, and
Field Marshal von Hindenburg, who
crossed the Narew at some points, are
held up by Russian counterattacks.
