cided that they never do anything

Reading* the despatches in the
newspapers will prove that more people
lose their lives while in the pursuit
of mere pleasure than do in the pur-;
suit of useful work.

There arc those who hi|.*e fits at j
things not at all dangerous, and then
lie down and go to sleep with things
that are deadly. Such is the inconsistency
of human kind.
o
It has been discovered that only a
few cases of pellagra - occur in the
cities, while the country districts in
some places is fill1 f it. The reason
for this is to be found in tho
ence between the diets of the people
in the two places.
o
PREVENTION OF PELLAGRA.
Scientists studying the cause and
prevention of pellagra have come to
the conclusion that it is the result of
eating too long a class of foods containing
too much starch. They say
that the farmers instead of consuming
the eggs and the hams, will sell these
to the city people, and as a result of
things like these, they find plenty of
pellagra in the country, hut very little
of the disease in the cities. There is
much in what they have found. While
the cause of the disease has puzzled
the medical profession for many
years, they have believed all along
that the cause of the disease had some
connection with the food of the people.
They are now sure of this proposition,
or they say they are. The number of
cases developing in this State during
the last five or six years is alarming.
We want to do what we can to help
in the prevention of the disease. We
therefore publish the above statement
and would recommend that those
threatened with the disease, or only
think they are, cut out corn bread and
hominy and wheat bread too, from
the diet, and 1// meats, eggs, vegetables
and the like foods until all danger
is past. This will be better than
waiting until the disease has made
inroads upon the system and a physician
has to be called no doubt after it
is entirely too late for him to do any
real good.

Justice Watts* Writ is Presented to
Tax Commission.
Columbia.?U. R. Brooks, clerk of
1 the Supreme Court, acting upon the
order of Associate Justice Watts, has
served a writ of mandamus upon A.
W. Jones, John P, Derham and W. G.
Query, members of the State tax commission,
requiring' them to return to
the county auditor of Greenwood the
statement and return made by the
National Loan and Exchange Bank of
Greenwood. The commission is required
to "Certify perfect obedience and
due execution of this writ to our Supreme
Court, to be held on the fourth
Tuesday in November, 1915.
