Declared Sane After Twice f
Before Found Sane. |
New York.?Harry Kendall Thaw 3
was declared sane by a jury which Tor w
nearly three weeks had listened to tes- 9
timony given in the sup rem court here B
before Justice Peter Hendrick. Forty a
eight minutes were consumed and two a
ballots were taken in reaching a ver- 9
diet. j|
Justice Hendrick, on Friday morn- a
ing will announce whether the com- 9
^ mitment upon which Thaw was incur- U
' cerated in the State Hospital for U
^ jL Criminal insane at Mattewan shall 9
7f" A be vacated, thereby giving to the slay
ijjl er of Stanford White the libc.|y ot a
j which he has fought in the courts for
nine years. j
It was at the end of a d/w of ad- 8 -
dresses by council and the charge ol' H
I the justice that the jury retired. While'H
the twelve men were deliberating, theja
crowd at the court room and about the M
court house was augmented by scores W
of people who believed that a verdict j gj
quickly would be found. fJ
Crowd Warned to Keep Quiet. H
Shortly before 4 o'clock a bailiff
came from txue jury room and inform- n
ed Justice Iiendrick that a verdict had
been reached. The doors immdiately $3
wore locked and Justice iiendrick as- j|
cending the bench, warned the specta- S
tors that any demonstration would be &
met with severe punishment. Then 8
the jui'y came in. In reply to a ques- B
tion by the court as to whether a ver- ?1
j diet nad oeen readied, the foreman j
handed over a sheet of legal paper jj|
which was passd to the justice on thoigij
bench. Justice Iiendrick read it
handed back to the clerk. i?
"Gentlemen of the jury," said the g
clerk, "the question yqji have been ask a
ed in t li i s: Is Harry K. Thaw no v. J
sane ? Your answer is yes." ?
