,
New York.?Frank Holt, who attempted
to assassinate J. P. Morgan
and placed a bomb in the Capitol
building at Washington, planned to
destroy the Trans-Atlantic liners Saxonia
and Philadelphia by dynamite
which, it is believed, he had placed
aboard the vessels before they sailed
from New York for Liverpool July 3.
Holt so advised his wife in a letter
to her at Dallas, Texas. The letter,
Police Commissioner Woods announced
was taken by Mrs. Holt and her
father to a former Governor of Texas
I who communicated with Major Pullman,
head of the Washington police.
Major Pullman at once transmitted
the information to the United States
Navy Department and police headquarters
here.
Warnings by wireless were sent
broadcast over the Atlantic from stations
on the eastern seaboard advising
the Saxonia and Philadelphia to steer
toward each other. Commissioner
Woods announced that the Navy De
partment also had arranged to send a
fast cruiser after the liners.
The Philadelphia was reached by
wireless. She replied everything
aboard had been identified and that
all was well.

would be impossible for any one to
pass the many lines of guards at the
piers and to place explosives aboard
iho ships. The Cunard lino has six
lines of guards protecting its vessels
from intruders.
T Told Wife to Watch.
In Holt's letter to his wife he advised
her to watch the newspapers oi
Wednesday, July 7, and told her sh(
would see in those papers just whai
he had done.
"Steamers leaving New York, Julj
3 will be destroyed in mid-ocean by ar
explosion," he is quoted as having
written.

known to the police at 9 o'clock yes
terday morning but no public an
nouncement was made. The first wor
of his letter came from Glen Cove. It
contents were divulged by a man wh
had talked with Holt in his cell for
long time yesterday. This man refus
ed to permit the use of his name, bu
because of his standing there was n
doubt as to the authenticity of his as

*
K3 Lcll/UIIlUIlt. I
New York.?Police authorities con- I
tinued today their investigations to
ascertain whether Prank Holt had I
planted bombs on board any steam- I
ships now on their way across the At- I
lantic. As a result of wireless warn
ings reassuring meassages had been I
received from the Saxonia and Phila- W I
delphia in mid Atlantic saying they I
had been searched for bombs and I
nothing found. Holt in a letter to his I
wife wrote that one of these vessels I
should sink on July 7. I
Further efforts were made to dis
cover what had become of the CO H
pounds of dynamite missing from I
Holt's store of explosives hidden here. H
Although it appeared that Holt had H
bought 40 per cent dynamite, that H
found in his trunk was the 60 per cent I
kind. This suggested a possibility H
that all his explosives had. not been H
found.
Arrangements were made to hold an f I
inquest on Holt's suicide today. His H
identification as Erich Munenter, in- I
dieted in Cambridge, Mass., for the ? H
murder of his wife, was regarded by H
authorities as complete. jj H
.J. P. Morgan, who was shot by Holt S
has so far recovered as to be able to W
walk about his house at Glen Cove. ^ *
Is This the Work of Holt? I
New York.?As if in, answer to H
Frank Holt's warning that a ship at H
sea "should sink, God willing, on the H
7th," there came last night a wirelss H
message, made public today, from H
Capt. Claret of the Atlantic transport H
line steamer Minnehaha, telling that H
his ship was afire, 570 miles south- I
east of Halifax.
The ship had sufficient ammunition H
aboard, by the line's admission, to H
sink her should the flames reach it, H
but whether the blaze in her hold
was started by a bomb which Holt had H
placed there was a matter of pure I
conjecture. It was possible he had
done so, an official said.
('apt. Claret's messages said the fire %
was in No. II hole and was not serious

from the hole. H
No passengers were aboard the Min
nehaha. Her crew numbered approxi- jH
j mately 100. She was at her pier here
about a week taking on cargo before c
she sailed for London last Saturday' I
July 8. Holt made his attempt on the
life of J. P. Morgan at Glen Cove last
Saturday) July 8.
The Minnehaha should reach Halifax,
it was said, tomorrow afternoon.
"We do not open and examine every
package or parcol taken aboard," an *
official of the line said, "but we exor- I
cise all reasonable precautions to pre- I
vent the placing of bombs aboard our H
ships.
