Killed Himself Last Week by
Jumping From Top
of Cell.
Frank Holt, the Cornell University
Professor, who shot J. P. Morgan in
his home near Glen Cove, committed
suicide in the jail at Mineola, N. Y.
While several of the jail authorities
declare that Holt killed himself by
climbing through the opening at the
top of the cell doo-" and then plunging
to the narrow court below, Holt's
keeper said that he was positive that .
the prisoner was killed in his own ,
cell where he found the body. i
Several of those about the jail said ?
they heard an explosion the report
coming1 from Holt's cell. This noise, ,
it was believed, was due to the fall- ]
ing of boards from the to]) of the cell, i
District Attorney Smith searched \
Pni! V. roll im nediatelv nftpv mvivinir
at the jail ami for v.i a letter written j
on yellow paper. The letter which |
Holt must have written before he at
tempted suicide v Ju 11 the pencil with j
whu ii ha t ' 1.- vera an art' i v was ,
taken from him. was addressed "To
My-Dears," and follows:
1 is Last Letter.

Frank."
P. S.?All please pardon me for all
the heartaches I have brought you.
, Pray with me that Fee slaughter will
,<stop. Fly heart aches, Good-bye."
Frank Holt, was identified as Erich
Muneute , the Harvard instructor who
disappeared after being indicted as
the murderer of his wife. Leona, in
Cambrii Ve, Mass., in 1000.
The Identification was made by S.
r. Snvah, State detective of the district
att rney's office of Middlesex
county, M; uchuseits, Theodore Hillier.

Jeremiah O'Ryan, the keeper who
was on guard u1 Ho'i's cell when Holt
committed suicide, had recovered his
'composure sufficiently to tell a connected
story. O'Ryan said he had
been employed by Sheriff Pot tit to
guard the prisoner from 8 p. rn. to 8
a. m. Last night at 8 o'clock O'Ryan
went to the entrance of fTolt's ce^ipHolt
seemed to be cheerful.
"I had some food today and managed
to retain it on my stomach."
O'Ryan said Holt told him. "I feel
much better but 1 must get some sleep
These detectives have been coming in
and asking me all kinds of questions
and they have been bothering me day
and night. I must get sleep. I have
got an important statement to make
tomorro wand I must be able to convince
people that what I say is true."
O'Ryan said Holt turned over on his
side and remained there for about an
hour. At the end of that time O'Ryan
heard a noise in the next corridor. He
glanced at Holt and saw he had chang
>ed his position so he was facing the
dor, but apparently was sleeping.
O'Ryan then crept, he says, on his
hands and knees down tho rnrri/lor to
check the disturbance so Holt might
sleep. He looked into the other corridor
and found there was nothing there
As he was about to start back O'Ryan
said he heard a noise that sounded
like a revolver shot.
"I ran back to the cell and said to
myself, 'He's done it. Somebody slip
pen mm a gun.' 1 looked into his cell
and did not see him. Then I thought
that maybe he had been shot from the
outside. I said to myself 'He might
shoot me,' so I drew my revolver and
went to the cell, expecting him to
jump at me. It was dark and I could
not see him. I tripped and fell. When
I looked down I saw that I had fallen
over his body."
Counsel Satisfied.
Martin W. Littleton, who had been
retained as counsel for Holt, reached
Mineola today and examined Holt's
cell closely. Mr. Littleton climbed up
in the iron bars in the side of the cell,
as Holt apparently had done before
committing suicide, to see if it were
possible for a man to kill himself in

that manner. Mr. Littleton was convinced
that it was.
Mr. Littleton sent the following telegram
to Thomas R. James at Dallas:
"Holt a suicide in jail here. Undoubtedly
demented. Do you wish
body shipped to Dallas?"
The identification came after the
t three men, Smith, Hillier, and Brown
had made a careful examination of the |
body. Smith said the gold bridge in
Holt's upper right jaw was the same
as that in the mouth of Munenter. The
Massachusetts detective declared he
was positive of his indentification.
| Hillier, who lived with Munenter
and drove him to the railroad station
the night he disappeared, was equally
positive, and so was Brown, who had
known Munenter personally.
