Four ribs on his right side were broken and the fall was a terrible shock. Gardner declared that he would be climbing.again in a week. Whether: he would attempt to climb the capital, dome he did not say. The dome was! wet yesterday and thts added to the difficulty in ''Satauet'' obtaining a hold. The public generally manifested great interest in Gardiner's condition, V the hospital telephones have been ringing with inquiries adding to the < duties of the nurses. Gardner is a resident of Newport * News, Va., where he has a wife and ^ three small children. jmX Hundreds of persons saw "Satanct" ijjjl fall. The spectators had gathered in response to the announcement that / the daring steeple jack would climb fr the .capitol from base of the columns on the north side of the flagpole. He reached the roof in safety. By that time the mists had turned into rain, and "Satanet" himself said he was i doubtful if he could complete the .... 1 journey. lie p'.uchilv promised to try! und begun the second half of his j climb. It I was at first thought that he was dead, - hut when assistance reached him he was found to be semi-conscious and | badly hurt. With difficulty he was gotten off the roof and out of the capitol building and rushed to a hospital. The man explained that he lost his hold, the copper covering of the dome being wet and slippery following a driving rain. "Satanet" is styled the "human fly" # because of his ability to climb buildings seemingly impossible of ascent from the exterior. It is said that he has successfully scaled some of the tallest buildings in the country, including the Flatiron structure in New Yoi k..
