the machine shops of the Southern
Railway Company in Asheville and on
the morning of his disappearance he
left home about 5 o'clock. lie told
Mrs McDevitt that he didn't intend

to work that day as he was feeling
bad, but stilted that he would go to
the shop to inform the foreman that
he could not report.for duty. He did
not arrive at the place at which he)
was employed and no one has been
found who saw him on the morning
of his disappearance. His union
card and his annual pass on the
Southern Railway lines were found

recognition by the United States government
attracted widespread attention
in official and diplomatic circles 1
The Carranza authorities have been 1
active recently in seeking recognition 1
and it had been reported that they 1
intended issuing a statement covering
their intentions. The United
States government, it was said, had
been advised of the Carranza plans, (
although it was said at the state dc- 1
partment that the question of recognition
had not been formally eonsih- J
ered. i

Reports of an impending battle between
Gen. Villa s army and Gen.
Obregon's Carranza forces attracted
considerable attention. General Vil-;
la's agents say that he has gathered
an army of 35,000 men, v.'ithj
jhousamis of rounds of ammunition
'or an attack.
Unoflaiai advices received said that
Duval West, President V/ilson's per-'
ional representative in Mexico, was
due to arrive at Vera Cruz and sai:

The United States is not considering
the question of recognizing any
government in Mexico, Secretary,
Bryan again declared when his attcn- i

ranza administration expected early;
recognition. The secretary would not
discuss the matter further.
It is known that Carranza officials
are urging their claims to recognition
and plan to issue a statement
soon outlining the proposals they |
have presented to the state department.

Whether or not the enforcement of

during the recent session of the
South Carolina Legislature, and the
raiding of blind tigers in Charleston
city and county have directly affected
the sales of liquor by the Charleston
v-ountv dispensary can not be dofmiteiy
stated. At any rate, sales showed a
narked increase since the last week
f March, and thai they are contin!
uing to increase proportionately.
While figures for April business of
this year are not yet available, it is
believed they will show sales double
in volume those of Ap 1, 11)14.
