Th.o price of wheat is now out of
sight and the cost of flour has .gone
up ecordingly. This shows more ihar
anything else the impoilance of en,
farmers planting wheat and raismg
their own flour. The fact that there
is no flour mill in this section does no
amount to anything, because when tin
farmers begin to plant wheat the flour
mill will come.
The manager of the Horry Realty,

was compelled to shut down lately on
cn account of the high water in the
river. This company now has one of
the finest plants in the State. With
up-to-date machinery . and the latest
appliances ki\own to the lumber business,
they are prepared to deliver a
larger daily cut than they have ever
turned out before. The plant is well
built on the site of the old one that
was burned last year. The arrangement
is very convenient and at least
double the quantity of lumber can be
handled and in much less time. It was
stated that the plant would be running
again as soon as the freshets
would permit.

PRICES CiN FLOUR i
SOAR UPWARD
Some Bakers Raise Price of the
Loaf; Others Put Less Dough
BAKERS ARE HARD. HIT
Ought to Encourage the Farmers
of Horry County to
Plant More Wheat.
The price of flour recently soared
upward without any very apparent
cause, unless it was the war, and the
prices show a disposition to go higher
still instead of coming down. It makes
still nother problem for the house
keeper, and the bakers of the country j
arc hard hit indeed. Some of them I
will increase the price of the loaf to *
six cents instead of five as it has al- J
ways been, others will put less bread t
in the loaf and sell their product at N
the same old price.
The threat of the President to in- ?
quire into the causes which have led i
to a phenomir.al rise in the price of J
wheat have given some decree of hope \
to the people ol* this country who can- 5
not do very well without their biscuit S
for breakfast .and their Raker's bread V
for the other two meals. All over the 2
counti.v bakers are insisting that they J|
must cut down the size of the bread s
loaves and add a cent or two to the 3
price charged for them. There really
seems to be no way for the baker to ]
make buckle and tongue meet except '
by increasing the cost of his roduct ?
to those who have to use it, and the ]
use of baker's bread is nearly as gen- |
oral through the South now as it is )
through the North East. Nearly everyone
patronizes the baker. j

to believe that if they could
have been trained in the past or could
be trained in the future like Miss
Stroud has them started, we would
have noble men and women in oui
community. At this school 1 spent
the larger part of my school days. I
attended the closing of the school, and
was somewhat surprised at seeing the
improvements and changes, in such a
short period of time. The day our
school closed was one of the most
beautiful of the year. Everyone seemed
to enjoy the day. The first thing
on the program was a march or drill
by the boys and girls which was just
as fine as could be, and this was followed
by a song by the small boys and
girls, after which another song was
sung by the larger boys and girls, assisted
by the small boys and girls com
bined, and by this time the fathers
and mothers and even grand-fathers
and grand-mothers began to come in
to hear the boys and girls spell in a
spelling match. This was enjoyed by
everyone.
Another little number on the pro
pram which was enjoyed very highly
was a little egg hunt similar to an
Easter egg hunt. After all, the house
was filled to more than double its capacity
by the children and visitors.
There was the largest crowd of people
at our school breaking that ever attended
before. We also had some good
speaking by some of the patrons,
which attracted the attention of every
one. We know the boys and girls
were in a cored ont dread to sec the
last day of school, but the last day is
