i
UTER CONFIRMED <
f
I
It is Known That the Armies of Both ^
Sides Now Reach Their Battle Line }
to the Sea,?No Further Attempt <
at Outflanking.
1
Reports from London reaching this j
country last Friday to the effect that y
the allied armies of England and c
France had made a considerable progress
against the German soldiers, and *
this news was confirmed last Satur- f
day when reports of an official nature t
came over from Paris.
It is not indicated in the communi- j
cation at what part of the coast the t
allies' fighting; line reaches the sea, n
but the nearest point is 22 miles from '
Ypres and is close to the Franco-Belgian
frontier. This, however, is much c
nearer Dunkirk than Ostend, which a
the Germans are reported to have oc*
7
eupicd and the presumption, based on
knowledge of the German movement f
is that the line of the allies is in a n
more northerly direction and conse- ^
quently is nearer thirty than twenty (A,
miles in length. The line would seem
to be a bar to all advance by the Ger- II
mans along the cost, which doubtless T1
was their plan when their cavalry ^
made a dash toward Calois. y.
No Outflanking. o
AVith both the belligenenc lines *
reaching to the sea there now can be ^
no attempts at outflanking by either n
army. To win success one or the oth- o
er of the opponents must break c
through the line and the army having ^
< Vm <rrn;ifncf nnmhnr ?f mm Jind t.ho
ability to move them to a chosen point ii
seemingly has a better chance to sue- n
ceed in this attempt. ^
German Reinforcements. j
The Germans are sid to have been
sending further reinforcements from I
Germany to stiffen their lines and unable
them to resume the offensive.
German Defeat. ?
Basel, Switzerland, again reported
a defeat of the Germans in the Vos- *ges.
There is no mention of the ru- j
mor in the official communications,
although such a defeat has been re- ?
ported several times from unofficial c
sources.
Fulfillment of the promise that J
pressure would be taken off France
and Belgium when the big battle com- 1
menced in the east again has been delayed.
The Germans are before Warsaw?in
fact, fighting has taken place ?
only eight miles fi*om that city.
Cruiser Torpedoed.
One more keel has to be added to \
the British naval losses in the war,
the cruiser Hawke having been sunk t
by a German submarine in northern ^
waters. As in the case of the ships
which the Germans have destroyed by d
means of submarines only a few of ^
the crew escaped. I 11
Fifty-two Men Rescued. j
\ Of the Hawkc's crew three petty offiecers
and 49 men arc reported to ^
have been rescued by a trawler, while ^
one officer and twenty men are said
to have escaped on a raft. The Hawke r
is believed to have had on board a
crew of 400 men. The submarine 1
which sunk her is supposed to have s
escaped. Nothing further has been
heard of the movements of the Rus- ?
sian and Turkish fleets in the Black .
Sea. Constantinople denies the report
which never extended beyond that 7
city, to the effect that the former
German cruiser, Breslau, which now ^
flies the Turkish flag, had been sunk, rj
Traffic Will Continue. (
Col. Goethals cabled the war de- ^
partment last Friday that traffic
through the Panama canal, blocked by ]
a landslide into Culebra Cut last Wed
nesday night, would -be resumed in *
about a week unless there were furth- r
er earth movements.

Work for Unemployed.
James Eades How, the self-styled J
"millionair hobo," suggested to a | (
senate committee today that the Unit- 1
ed States take over the cotton mills 5
of the country and operate them to j
capacity, thus furnishing work to
the "army of unemployed."
"Economy Day." *
Announcement by the extension i
riom?nn r.nllofrn roronllv
UlTiDlv/ll VA
that it was planning to hold "Economy
Day" in every county seat in
South Carolina late in November has
aroused much interest and there arc i
indications that the idea will be taken
up enthusiastically by the public.
Bumper crops without market facilities
have sent more farmers staggering
down the back alleys of agriculture
than all the pests and drought
that ever cursed the nation.

HOUSE OF REPS. I
WILL PASS BILL;
I
IT IS EXPECTED THIS WEEK CUT
TING COTTON ACREAGE ONE
THIRD.

Lower House of General Assembly
Favors This Making Six Acres the

By an overwhelming majority?78
*or and 19 against?the select commit
;ee bill, prohibiting the cultivation of
nore than one-third of the arable I
ands of the state to cotton or more'
;han a maximum of six acres to the
1 ? - - - *
mow, was passed t;-om second to third
catling in the house of representatives
Thursday afternoon of last week
it 2:d0 o'clock aider a night and a day
>f debate on every angle of the present
cotton situation. The vote Thurslay
was a test, and, when tlie bill
amc up for tiiir 1 reading on last iTiIr.y,
it was passed by the House and
;ent over to tiio Senate. The bill will
omo up in the Senate this week and
nay in fact he passed by the Senate
without much trouble, or it may bo,
:illcd.
If this bill is enacted it is said that
t wiss result in a proportionately1
argor curtailment of production of
he staple in the Pee Pee section than
n the Piedmont section. This opinon
is based on the fact that in the
Ve Pec section, where the country is |
mly slightly rolling and the soil light:
tnd loamy, it is possible to cultivate j
inder normal conditions many more
teres of cotton with a single work
inimal than can be tended in the Pied
nont, where the country is rugged
mil the so:! heavy and clayey. In
ither words, of two farmers, one in
he Piedmont and the other in the i
5ee Pee, cultivating farms of the j
ame size, the former requires a larg- j
>r number of wnrlr animals: tluin the!
ater. Basing the curtailment of cot-;
on production on a specified number
>cr of acres to a work animal will, it
s maintained, consequently cause a
argcr curtailment of production in
he Pee Dee and the costal plain of
he South generally than in the Piednont
regions.
Undergone no Change.
While high administration officials
itated last Thursday that loans to
>elligercnt countries by private individuals
in the United States were in
he same class as munitions of war
ind other kinds of contraband trade
vhich the American government was
leither legally able nor obligated by
nternational law to prohibit, it beanie
known at the White House that
he administration policy toward forign
loans had undergone 110 change.
Found Guilty.
Charles Henry Weston, formerly of
Salem. Mass., last Friday was found
guilty of tht murder of his wife and
it the same time declared insane and
ommitted to an asylum.
Addressed Farmers.
Zefcrino Dominguez, educator and
leace champion in Mexico, addressed
he farmers national congress at Fort
[Vorth, Texas, last Friday 011 agri:ulture
