An interesting even4; of last week
was the flight of tlie British naval aeroplanes
from Antwerp to Dusseldorff
jgjproximaiviy a distance of 500 miles
in the course of which they dropped
bombs on the Zeppelin sheds of the
German aerial fleet which would cooperate
with the German navy in case
of a raid on England.
The official bureau intimates that
the flight was undertaken as a warn^g
to the Germans that if any more
bombs are dropped on unfortified
towns in Belgium or France the allies
can retaliate. It is likely the warning
also is intended to include London,
which has been expecting a visit from
the Zeppelins. It has not been possible
..vet to make up the rolls of the losses
the sinking of the British cruisers

is hoped trawlers and other vessels

The landing of some of the survors

and entitled to the hospitality of a
dflutral country until they are ready
return home.

from France, and it is known that
losses on both sides are bevy.

DEMAND FOR CLOTH FROM FOREIGN
LANDS.
The Parker Mills Company in this
State, Consisting of Sixteen Mills
Deluged With Orders,?Will
Resume Operations.
Each of the 16 cotton mills in this
State of the Parker Mills Co., operating
550,000 spindles, have resumed
full-time operation and two of them
are working 46,000 spindles day and
night in their efFort to fill urgent orders.
The average monthly consumption
of these mills is between 5,000
and 6,000 bales, and employment is
given about 5,000 operatives.
The remarkable improvement last
week in the demand for cotton goods
from domestic, South American and
European sources resulted in enor- |

Exports Over the Water Believe That
the Longer the Battle Endures, the j

Last week the bulk of the armies of :
France and England were remaining j *
in the trenches. They were waiting ,
while the artillery exchanged furious |
cannonades with the Herman batteries .
Some brilliant feats at arms were 1
performed at various points on the
lines, extending along the Oise, the
Aisne and Woevre.
Jules Vedrines, the noted French
aviator, was credited with a courageous
flight in mid air with a German j
aviator whom he brought to earth., v
The German was daringly reconnoitering
the position of the allies when '
Vedrines ascended. ,
Moving swiftly upward until he was (
above the German, Vedrines gave t
chase, and as he skimmed along fusil- 1
laded the air scout with his automatic
guns. i
The German machine was riddled i
and the aviator killed, both falling j
to the ground 15 minutes after Ved- t
rines took the air.
Vedrines has accomplished a si mi- <
lar feat once before. 1
These incidents, however, were im- (
portant only for their influence in en- .
couraging the allied troops, and did j l
not effect the result of the great bat- <
tie which already had lasted a week :
and promised to continue for many | j

Military experts believed the longer
the battle endured the better it :
would be for allied armies, who would
be able to push strong fresh troops i
to places where they were needed.

of Clemson College has warned
