John G. Richards in the second race
for governor.
The vote between the three leaders
in this contest was close to the end,
and while it became apparent that
Richards would be in the second pri^
mary, the relative positions of Manning
and Cooper remained in doubt
until the complete returns from most
of the counties were in.
The final results show that Senator
Smith has a large majority over all
of his opponents. The total majority
^ against Governor Bleaso is about
twenty thousand.
Lieutenant Governor.
Andrew J. Bethea, Anti-Blouse candidate
for Lieutenant Governor, goes
into the second race with a good lead
over B. Frank Kelley, Blouse candidate.
Comptroller General.
Comptroller General A. W. Jones's
renomination over his opponent, Mr.
Summorsett, is by a vote of 79,204 for
Jones to 40,680 for Summorsett.
Adjutant General.
Adjutant Gen. W. W. Moore has a
majority of about thirty thousand,
and is elected.
Attorney General.
Attorney General Peeples is reelected.

The vote in the race tor Railroad

Frank W. Shealey and C. D. Fortner

\ Congressional Races.
Whaley, Byrnes, Johnson, Finley
and Ragsdale have been renominated
to Congress. In the 3rd district there
will be a second race between Aiken
and Dominick. Aiken lacked only a
^ few hundred votes of having a majority
over his three opponents.

An explosion early last Sunday that
destroyed the employing office of the
Anaconda Copper Mining Company
caused Governor Stewart at Helena
to order that Butte again be placed
under guard of the State militia.
Trains Crash.
Four people were injured, one of
them, Dr.' Ben Henderson, a colored
physician, may die, when A. ?C. L.
passenger train No. 85, split in two a
freight train on the crossing of the
Atlantic and Yadkin branch and main
line, in Fayetteville, N. C., ldst Sunday.

This week saw the beginning of the
tobacco sales season in the bright leaf
belt of North Carolina, and despite,
the admitted unsettled conditions in
the business world, the season is expected
to be one of the greatest since
the weed became a stupe in Kinston,
N. C.
Has Closed Session.
The cotton conference presided over
by Harvey Jordan, of Atlanta, has
closed a successful session. A general
plan to hold cotton oil* the market
for an indefinite period was agreed to,
but no price limit was fixed. Another
session will be held September 29,
when it is expected that the sentiment
of,Southern cotton growers will
be sufficiently crystalized to enable
the congress to agrde upon a price
limit.

of blast furnace gases for operating
gas engines and for illumination and
heating, and the later developments in
making nitric acid from these gases,
and also the manufacture of brick and
cement from slags. All these matters
have been under discussion for a number
of years, but a new idea was presented
at this meeting looking toward
the synthetic production of india rubber
from coke oven gases. The president's
words were: "It is being sought
to obtain from it the hydrocarbons, the
derivatives of which were found in
india rubber, and experiments that
have been made permit the foreshadowing
of the manufacture of artificial
rubber."
