Letters from Misses Long and Hinson
Telling of their Trip to Winthrop
Bright and early on the morning of
July 2nd we left Conway for Winthrop
College, at Rock Hill, S. C. Why
were we going there? Was it that
we could go? The answer is simple
?we worked earnestly and steadfastly
with our little romato plots, our intention
being to win the scholarships
for the short course at the summer
school given to the two girls of our
county having the best tomato plot
and best kept note book, and we won.
It was a trip of pleasure and benefit.
While there we studied dairying,
gardening, poultry and cooking. From
1 each we think we derived a great deal
of useful knowledge, which all girls
on a farm should have.

less to say we were glad to see that
hour. In the evening we had moving
pictures, lectures and music and once
a reading of Rip Van Winkle by Mr.
Baber.
One evening Mr. and Mrs. M. J.
Bullock took us to the theatre which
we enjoyed very much and again Mrs.
Francis Burroughs gave us a watermelon
slicing. Everybody was so
nice to us and we fully appreciated it.
We wish to say to all who were interested
in us that your elTorts were not
in vain, for we learned so many things
some of which arc: making and using
a tireless cooker, picking out a
good dairy cow, how to bud and graft
trees, to make hot beds and cold
frames, and to use the incubator
for hatching chickens.
Our letter is getting rather lengthy
though we could write much more.
In closing we wish to thank Miss
Ida Moore, our county agent, Miss
Edith L. Parrott, our State agent, Dr.
D. B. Johnon, also the banks of Conway,
and all others who made it pos(
sible for us to go.

by us all. Tobacco curing is the "go"
now.
Mrs. Julia A. Moore is very ill at
this writing. We hope her a speedy
recovery.
Mr. J. Osby Cartrette, who holds a
position with the Farmers and Merchants
Bank of Conway, spent last
Sunday at home here.
Mr. and Mrs. John W. Oliver and
little sons, John, Jr., and J. P., and
Mrs. R. G. Oliver and little daughter,
Ella Eugenia, of Centenary, spent the
week end here the guests of Mesdames
Oliver's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.
H. Baker. They also visited their sister,
Mrs. Sam Harris of liomevood.
Miss Fannie Baker spent last Tuesday
at Homewood visiting friends.
Rev. R. O. Hendrix spent last Saturday
night at Mr. J. D. Allen's at
this place.
Mrs. J. H. Baker and daughters,
Fannie and Eunice, spent last Monday
in Conway the guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Jos. D. Oliver.
Mr. J. Ernest Baker, who has accepted
a position with the Conway
Hardware Co., spent last Sunday here
at home. "Jasmine."

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION.
On Account of the Vacancy for Rural
Free Delivery Route From Galivants
Ferry.
There will be a civil service Examination
at Conway on August 8th, on
account of a carrier for the rural
route leading from Galivants Ferry,
S. C. The compensation of a rural
carrier varies according to the length
of the route from $484.00 to $1200.00
per annum. I
Age, 18 to 55, on the date of the ex- |
amination. The maximum age is
waived in cases of persons honorably !
discharged from the United States
military or naval service.
An applicant must have his actual
domicile in the territory supplied by
a postoflice in the county for which
the examination is announced.
I he examination is open to all male
. citizens of the united States who can
1 comply with the requirements.
Application Form 1341, and full ini
formation concerning the requirements
of the examination can be sc1
surcd from the secretary of the local
examining board or the postmaster
at any of the examination points named
above, or from the United States
Civil Service Commission, Washington,
D. C.

Applications should be properly- i
ly executed and tiled with the Ccmington.
As examination paprs are
shipped direct from the Commission
to the places of examination, it is
necessary that applications be received
in ample time to arrange for the
examination desired at the place indicated
by the applicant. The Commission
will therefore arrange to examine
any applicant whose applica:
tion is received in time to permit the
shipment of the necessary papers.
An eligible register for the position
of rural letter carrier for each
county will be maintained. A perj
son must be examined for the county
in which the postofhee that supplies
his home is situated . As a result of
such examination he may become elii
gible to appointment as rural carrier
at any postofhce in such county. A
rural letter carrier after one year's
satisfactory service may be transferred
to the position of clerk or carrier
in a first or second class postofiice, to
the position of railway mail clerk, or
to other positions in the classified
service, subject to such examination
I as may be required by the civil service
rules.

DEATH OF MARION HUCKS
On July 17th, 1914 at 8 o'clock p.
m. death entered the home of Mr. and
Mrs. W. E. Mucks and carried away
their precious little boy. Little Marion
was sick only twelve hours. He
suffered untold misery. Aged two
years and five months. He was a
bright little boy and we all loved him
dearly, and did hate to give him up,
but God's will done, not ours. The interment
took place at ?..o camp
ground near Conway on Saturday
afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. Mr
Goldfinch.
A voice we loved is still, a place is
made vacant in our home which never
can be filled.
